Masruq narrated: We asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) about this verse: "And do not ever consider those who were killed in the way of Allah as dead." The verse continues up to: "They are given provision." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "These are the souls of the martyrs. In the presence of Allah Almighty they are like green birds; they have lamps hanging from the Throne, and they go wherever they wish in Paradise. Their Lord turns to them and says: 'Do you desire anything more, so that I may give it to you?' They say: 'O our Lord! Is it not the case that we can go wherever we wish in Paradise?' Then the Lord turns to them a second time and asks: 'Do you desire anything, so that I may give it to you in addition?' They say: 'O our Lord, can we not go wherever we wish in Paradise?' Then, a third time, the Lord turns to them and says: 'Do you desire anything that I may give you in addition?' They say: 'Return our souls to our bodies, so that we may fight in Your way and be killed once again.'" The narrator said: "Then the Lord remains silent regarding them."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. It also has some other, weak chains.
