Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would most often make this supplication: "O Allah! O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion." Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Do hearts also turn?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes. The heart of every human being among the children of Adam, of the creation of Allah, is between two of the fingers of Allah Almighty. If Allah Almighty wills, He keeps it upright in its place, and if He wills, He makes it deviate. So we ask Allah Almighty, our Lord, not to make our hearts deviate after He has guided us, and we also ask Him to grant us mercy from Himself; indeed, He is the Bestower." Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: I said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will you not teach me a supplication that I may make for myself?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Certainly! Say: 'O Allah! O Lord of the Prophet Muhammad, forgive my sin, remove the anger of my heart, and protect me from the misleading trials for as long as You keep me alive.'" (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Al-Tirmidhi recorded part of this narration.
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Shahr bin Hawshab, who is da'if (weak), though he has been declared trustworthy. The remaining chains of this narration will come in the chapters on Divine Decree and supplications, if Allah wills.
