Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this statement of Allah Almighty, (Allah Almighty says:) "They ask you about menstruation; say: It is a harm, so keep away from women during menstruation." The people related that the Jews say: Whoever has intercourse with his wife from behind, his child will be cross-eyed. So the women of the Ansar would not let their husbands have intercourse with them from behind. They came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him whether a man may have intercourse with his wife while she is menstruating, so Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "They ask you about menstruation; say: It is a harm, so keep away from women during menstruation, and do not approach them until they become pure (the narrator says: that is, until they reach the state of purity), and when they have purified themselves (the narrator says: that is, when they have taken the ritual bath), then come to them in the manner Allah has permitted you. Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves thoroughly. Your women are a tilth for you, so come to your tilth however you wish." (The narrator narrates:) The tilth means the place from which childbirth is possible.
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Muslim recorded this narration in abridged form.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ubaydullah bin Yazid al-Qurdawani, from whom no one other than his son has narrated; the rest of its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
