عَنْ قَتَادَةَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ رُفِعَ إِلَيْهِ رَجُلٌ قَتَلَ رَجُلًا ، فَجَاءَ أَوْلِيَاءُ الْمَقْتُولِ ، وَقَدْ عَفَا أَحَدُهُمْ ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ لِابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ : مَا تَقُولُ ؟ وَهُوَ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ ، فَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ : أَرَى أَنَّهُ قَدْ أُحْرِزَ مِنَ الْقَتْلِ ، قَالَ : فَضَرَبَ عَلَى كَتِفِهِ ، وَقَالَ : كَنِيفٌ مُلِئَ عِلْمًا .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ ، إِلَّا أَنْ قَتَادَةَ لَمْ يُدْرِكْ عُمَرَ وَلَا ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ .

Qatadah narrates: The case of a man who had killed another man was brought before Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). The heirs of the slain man came, and one of them had pardoned (the killer). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): What do you say about this? Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) was at that time beside Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I consider that now (the killer) cannot be executed. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) struck him on his shoulder and said: This is a vessel filled with knowledge.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that Qatadah did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), nor in the time of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
