Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once we were travelling with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we had some dates with us. Safwan said to me: "Give me these dates to eat." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "These are only a few dates, and I also fear that they will be called for (for the people); when the people make camp, you can eat with them." He said: "Give me some to eat, for hunger will destroy me" — such was the state he had reached — but I refused his request. I knew the mount on which the dates were. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was informed of this, and he said: "Tell Safwan to go away." That day Sayyiduna Safwan (may Allah be pleased with him) kept going to various Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); then he also came to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Where shall I go? Shall I go to disbelief?" Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about this, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Safwan to join us."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
