Majma al-Zawaid 10679 — Reports on the prescribed punishment
وَعَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ قَالَ : جَلَدَ عَلِيٌّ رَجُلًا مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ الْحَدَّ فِي الْخَمْرِ أَرْبَعِينَ جَلْدَةً بِسَوْطٍ لَهُ طَرَفَانِ . رَوَاهُ أَبُو يَعْلَى ، وَأَبُو جَعْفَرٍ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ عَلِيٍّ .
Imam Abu Ja'far (perhaps Imam al-Baqir is meant) narrates: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had a man from Quraysh given forty lashes for the offence of drinking wine, with a whip that had two ends.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and Imam Abu Ja'far (that is, Imam al-Baqir) did not hear from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
