Reports on the prescribed punishment for drinking wine

وَعَنْ أَزْهَرَ وَالِدِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - أُتِيَ بِشَارِبٍ وَهُوَ بِخَيْبَرَ فَحَثَا فِي وَجْهِهِ التُّرَابَ ، ثُمَّ أَمَرَ أَصْحَابَهُ فَضَرَبُوهُ بِنِعَالِهِمْ ، وَبِمَا كَانَ فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ حَتَّى قَالَ لَهُمْ : " ارْفَعُوا " فَرَفَعُوا ، فَتُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَتِلْكَ سُنَّتُهُ .
ثُمَّ جَلَدَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فِي الْخَمْرِ أَرْبَعِينَ ، ثُمَّ جَلَدَ عُمَرُ أَرْبَعِينَ صَدْرًا مِنْ إِمَارَتِهِ ، ثُمَّ جَلَدَ ثَمَانِينَ فِي آخِرِ خِلَافَتِهِ ، ثُمَّ جَلَدَ عُثْمَانُ أَرْبَعِينَ ، ثُمَّ جَلَدَ مُعَاوِيَةُ ثَمَانِينَ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ مِنْ رِوَايَةِ أَبِي الطَّاهِرِ بْنِ السَّرْحِ ، قَالَ : وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ خَالِي ، عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ . وَخَالُهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ وَهُوَ ثِقَةٌ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
ثُمَّ جَلَدَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فِي الْخَمْرِ أَرْبَعِينَ ، ثُمَّ جَلَدَ عُمَرُ أَرْبَعِينَ صَدْرًا مِنْ إِمَارَتِهِ ، ثُمَّ جَلَدَ ثَمَانِينَ فِي آخِرِ خِلَافَتِهِ ، ثُمَّ جَلَدَ عُثْمَانُ أَرْبَعِينَ ، ثُمَّ جَلَدَ مُعَاوِيَةُ ثَمَانِينَ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ مِنْ رِوَايَةِ أَبِي الطَّاهِرِ بْنِ السَّرْحِ ، قَالَ : وَجَدْتُ فِي كِتَابِ خَالِي ، عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ . وَخَالُهُ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْحَمِيدِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ وَهُوَ ثِقَةٌ ، وَبَقِيَّةُ رِجَالِهِ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Sayyiduna Azhar (may Allah be pleased with him), the father of Abd al-Rahman, narrates: A drunkard was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was at Khaybar. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw dust in his face, then he ordered his Companions, and they beat him with their sandals and with whatever was in their hands, until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Hold back now." They raised their hands. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, and this remained the practice until then. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave forty lashes for drinking wine; then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) gave forty lashes in the early period of his caliphate; then he gave eighty lashes in the later period of his caliphate; then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) gave forty lashes; then Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) gave eighty lashes.
Al-Tabarani recorded it as a narration of Abu al-Tahir bin al-Sarh, who said: "I found in the writing of my maternal uncle that this is reported from the narrator Uqayl." His maternal uncle is Abd al-Rahman bin Abd al-Hamid bin Salim, and he is thiqah (trustworthy); the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Al-Tabarani recorded it as a narration of Abu al-Tahir bin al-Sarh, who said: "I found in the writing of my maternal uncle that this is reported from the narrator Uqayl." His maternal uncle is Abd al-Rahman bin Abd al-Hamid bin Salim, and he is thiqah (trustworthy); the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
