Sayyiduna Iyad al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I took part in Yarmuk, and five men were our commanders: Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Yazid bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Ibn Hasanah (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Iyad (may Allah be pleased with him); this Iyad is not the one who narrated this hadith to Simak. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had said: "When there is fighting, Abu Ubaydah will be your commander." The narrator says: We wrote to him that death was surging towards us, and we asked him for reinforcements. He wrote back to us: "Your letter has reached me in which you ask me for reinforcements. I am sending you that which is mightiest in giving help and most present in battle, and that is Allah Almighty, so ask Him for help. For when Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was helped on the day of Badr, (the Muslims) were fewer in number than you. When this letter of mine reaches you, fight the enemy and do not refer back to me again." The narrator says: We fought the enemy, killed them and drove them back four farsakhs. The narrator says: We obtained wealth and consulted one another about it, and Sayyiduna Iyad (may Allah be pleased with him) advised us to give ten on behalf of each person. The narrator says: Once Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Who will race against me?" A young man said: "I will, if you will not be angry." The narrator says: I saw that the young man outran Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him), and I saw the two braids of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) bouncing as he rode behind the young man on the bare back of his horse.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
