Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 10177

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When we reached the place "Usfan", the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The spies of the polytheists are now at the place 'Dajnan'. Which of you knows the route of 'al-Hanzal'?" In the evening the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Is there anyone who will dismount and run ahead of the riders?" A man said: "O Messenger of Allah! I will do it." That man dismounted, and stones came in his way which were hurting him, and trees came which were clinging to his clothes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Mount up!" Then another man dismounted, and the stones began to hurt him too and the trees began to catch on his clothes too, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Mount up!" Then we came upon a path until we reached a mountain pass called "al-Hanzal". The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The likeness of this pass is like that gate through which the Children of Israel entered, when it was said to them: 'Enter this gate in a state of prostration and say "Hittah" (relieve us of our burdens); We will forgive you your sins.' Whoever passes through this pass tonight will be forgiven." So the people began to move quickly and cross it. The last person to cross through it was Sayyiduna Qatadah bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the furthest behind of the people. The narrator says: The people began to help one another mount, until we caught up with one another. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) halted, and we halted as well.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
