Urwah bin al-Zubayr narrates: Then came the expedition of Sayyiduna al-Mundhir bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him), who belonged to Banu Sa'idah; they went toward "Bi'r Ma'unah". The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent "al-Muttalib al-Sulami" with them to guide them on the way. Then the enemies of Allah sent word to Amir bin al-Tufayl asking him for help, and he helped them against the Muslims. He had Sayyiduna al-Mundhir bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) and his companions killed; only Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (may Allah be pleased with him) survived. They took him captive and spared his life, and they brought him to Makkah. He is the one who buried Sayyiduna Khubayb bin Adi (may Allah be pleased with him). On the day of "Bi'r Ma'unah", the polytheists offered Urwah bin al-Salt that they would grant him safety, but he did not accept, so they killed him as well. It has been mentioned to us that on the day of "Bi'r Ma'unah", when the enemy had surrounded them, they said: "O Allah! We find no one who will convey a message about us to Your Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him); there is none other than You. O Allah! Convey our greetings of peace to him on our behalf, and inform him of our situation."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, whose narration is hasan (good) when he is corroborated.
