It is reported from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) and others: "Amir bin Malik, the man who is called 'Mula'ib al-Asinnah', came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and at that time he was a polytheist. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered Islam to him, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I do not accept the gift of a polytheist.' Amir bin Malik said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Send whomever you wish from among your envoys (or preachers); I grant them protection.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a group, one of whom was Sayyiduna al-Mundhir bin Amr al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him); he is the one who is called 'U'tiqa li-Yamut' (he was set free to die). They were sent to scout among the people of Najd. Amir bin al-Tufayl learned of them, and he called on men from Banu Sulaym to go with him; they set out with him, and they killed those Companions at 'Bi'r Ma'unah', except Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (may Allah be pleased with him), whom Amir bin al-Tufayl seized and then released. He alone from among them came back to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Among those people was Sayyiduna Amir bin Fuhayrah (may Allah be pleased with him)." The narrator says: Urwah told me that he was killed that day, but when they buried (the dead) his body was not found. Urwah says: People held that the angels had buried him. Sayyiduna Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) composed these verses taunting Amir bin al-Tufayl: "O sons of Umm al-Banin! You are among the foremost of the people of Najd; does it not trouble you that Amir showed arrogance toward Abu Bara', violating the protection he had given? And a mistake is not like a deliberate act." Then Rabi'ah bin Amir bin Malik, for Amir bin al-Tufayl's violation of the protection of Amir bin Malik, struck Amir bin al-Tufayl in his thigh with a thrust that tore into it.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
