رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ ، وَرِجَالُهُ ثِقَاتٌ إِلَى ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ .
Muhammad bin Ishaq narrates: After the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed (in Madinah) for the remainder of Shawwal, Dhu al-Qa'dah and the (whole) month of Dhu al-Hijjah; the polytheists were in charge of that year's Hajj. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stayed through the month of Muharram as well. Then in the month of Safar he sent his Companions toward "Bi'r Ma'unah"; this was in the fourth month after the Battle of Uhud. Their account,
as they narrated it, is just as Ishaq narrated it to me, from al-Mughirah bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Harith bin Hisham, and from Abdullah bin Abi Bakr bin Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm, and from other people of knowledge. They narrate: "Abu Bara' Amir bin Malik bin Ja'far, 'Mula'ib al-Asinnah', came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered Islam to him; he did not accept Islam, but neither was he far from Islam. He said: 'O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! If you were to send a man from among your Companions to invite those people to your cause, that would be fitting; I hope that the people there will accept what you say.' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I fear (for them from) the people of Najd.' Abu Bara' said: 'I grant them protection; send them, so that they may invite people to your cause.' So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna al-Mundhir bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) of Banu Sa'idah, who was called 'al-Mu'taq li-Yamut' (the one set free to die), and with him he sent forty of the best of the Muslims. Among them were Sayyiduna al-Harith bin al-Simmah (may Allah be pleased with him); Sayyiduna Haram bin Milhan (may Allah be pleased with him), who belonged to Banu Adi bin al-Najjar; Sayyiduna Urwah bin Asma' bin al-Salt al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him); Sayyiduna Nafi' bin Budayl bin Warqa' al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him); Sayyiduna Amir bin Fuhayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), the freed slave of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him); and some others besides them who were among the best of the Muslims, and whose names have also been mentioned. They set out until they camped by 'Bi'r Ma'unah'. It was a well in the land of Banu Amir, and near it was the stony tract (harrah) of Banu Sulaym; the lands of both were near this well, but it was nearer to the land of Banu Sulaym. When they had camped there, they sent Sayyiduna Haram bin Milhan (may Allah be pleased with him) with the letter of the Messenger of Allah to Amir bin al-Tufayl. When he came to them, he did not even look at the letter; rather, he went for that man and killed him. Then he called on Banu Amir for help, but they refused to accept what he called them to. They said: 'We will not violate the protection given by Abu Bara' (i.e. Amir bin Malik, "Mula'ib al-Asinnah"), for he made a pact for these people and granted them protection.' Then he (i.e. Amir bin al-Tufayl) called various tribes of Banu Sulaym, Usayyah, Ri'l and Dhakwan, against them, and they accepted his call. They set out and surrounded the Muslims, encircling them around their camp. When those Companions saw them, they drew their swords and kept fighting until the very last of them was martyred, except Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) of Banu Dinar bin al-Najjar, who survived because they left him, as there was still a flicker of life in him; he was carried off, badly wounded, from among the slain. He lived on afterwards until he was martyred at the Battle of the Trench. With the grazing animals were Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah al-Damri (may Allah be pleased with him) and a man from the Ansar who belonged to Banu Amr bin Awf. What had befallen their companions became known to the two of them only through the birds circling over the camp. The two of them said: 'By Allah! Something must lie behind these birds.' Then the two of them came to look into it, and there were the people lying drenched in their blood, and the horsemen who had struck them were standing there. The Ansari said to Amr bin Umayyah: 'What is your opinion?' He said: 'My view is that we should go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and inform him about this.' The Ansari said: 'But I have no wish to save myself by leaving a place where al-Mundhir bin Amr has been killed, nor would I want men to bring the news of him in my stead.' He fought the enemy until he was martyred. Then they took Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) prisoner. When he told them that he belonged to the Mudar tribe, Amir bin al-Tufayl released him; he cut off the hair of his forelock and set him free in place of a slave whose freeing, he claimed, was due from his mother. Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) left from there, until, when he was at al-Qarqarah near Quba', two men from Banu Amir came and halted in the same shade where he was. The men of Banu Amir had been given a pact and protection by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), but Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) did not know of this. When they halted he asked them: 'Whom do you belong to?' The two of them said: 'To Banu Amir.' So Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) let them sleep, and when they had fallen asleep, he attacked them and killed them both. He thought that he had done right by them, since it amounted to taking revenge on Banu Amir, because they had harmed the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When Sayyiduna Amr bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of the situation, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'You have killed two people for whom I will certainly pay blood money.' Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'This is the doing of Abu Bara'; I disliked this and I feared it.' When Abu Bara' learned of this, it weighed heavily on him that Amir (bin al-Tufayl) had violated the protection he had given, and that, because of him and his protection, the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had suffered harm. So Hassan bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) composed these verses, inciting the son of Abu Bara' against Amir bin al-Tufayl: "O sons of Umm al-Banin! You are among the foremost of the people of Najd; does it not trouble you that Amir showed arrogance toward Abu Bara', violating the protection he had given? And a mistake is not like a deliberate act. Beware! Convey this message to Rabi'ah, the man of noble efforts: what has happened after me. Your father, Abu Bara', is the father of wars, and your maternal uncle, Hakam bin Sa'd, is a man of glory." So Rabi'ah bin Amir (i.e. the son of Abu Bara' "Mula'ib al-Asinnah") attacked Amir bin al-Tufayl and struck him with a spear, which hit his thigh but missed a fatal spot, and that man fell from his horse. He said: "This is the doing of Abu Bara'. If I die, my blood is for my uncle to settle, and it shall not be pursued; and if I live, I will decide whatever I see fit."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators up to Ibn Ishaq are thiqat (trustworthy).
