Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 10113

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When Abu Sufyan and the polytheists turned back from the Battle of Uhud and reached the place called al-Rawha', Abu Sufyan said: "You neither killed Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), nor did you seat the women behind you (as captives). What you have done is very bad." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) learned of this, he summoned the people. They all gathered and went as far as the place called Hamra' al-Asad, or the place called Bi'r Bani Uyaynah. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning it: "Those who responded to the call of Allah and the Messenger after injuries had afflicted them." The reason for this was that Abu Sufyan had said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Our next meeting with you will be at Badr, where you killed our companions." Those who were cowards went back, and those who were brave took up the gear of fighting and of trade. They came there but did not find anyone, so they said that it would happen later on. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse concerning it: "So they (i.e. the Muslims) returned with blessing from Allah and bounty, no harm having touched them."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Muhammad bin Mansur al-Jawwaz, who is thiqah (trustworthy).
