Shaqiq narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) told him: Eighteen of the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) were martyred on the day of Badr. Allah Almighty placed their souls in Paradise inside green birds, which go wherever they wish in Paradise. The narrator says: While they are in this state, your Lord turns towards them and says: "O My servants, what do you desire?" They say: "O our Lord, is there anything above this?" The Lord says: "O My servants, what do you desire?" (When this question and answer is repeated,) the fourth time they say: "Return our souls to our bodies, so that we may be killed again just as we were killed before."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). The names of these men will come in the chapter on those who took part in Badr, if Allah wills. Some hadiths about the souls of the martyrs have already passed before this.
