Loving for the Sake of Allah Almighty
Allah Almighty has said: “On that Day, all close friends will be enemies to each other, except the righteous.”
Hadith: 1
“And Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) narrates from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) that he said: A man went to another town to visit his brother. Allah sent an angel who asked him: Where are you going? He said: My brother lives in that town. I am going to him. The angel asked: Has he done any favor to you for which you are enduring hardship, or are you going to repay a favor? He said: No, I am only going because I love him for the sake of Allah Almighty. The angel said: Then I am sent by Allah to you; because of your love for him, Allah also loves you.”
Repaying Evil with Good
Allah Almighty has said: “Good and evil are not equal. Repel evil with what is better; then the one between whom and you there was enmity will become as though he were a close friend.”
Hadith: 2
“And Hazrat Abu Dharr (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Fear Allah wherever you are. Follow evil with good. Good will erase evil, and treat people with good manners.”
Forgiveness
Allah Almighty has said: “Adopt forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.”
Hadith: 3
“And from our master Abu Hurairah (RA) it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Charity never decreases wealth, and forgiveness increases the honor of a servant, and whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah raises his status.”
Helping Others
Allah Almighty has said: “And cooperate in righteousness and piety.”
Hadith: 4
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever relieves a believer of some hardship in this world, Allah will relieve some of his hardships on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever makes things easy for a distressed person, Allah will make things easy for him in this world and the Hereafter. Whoever conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his faults on the Day of Judgment. Allah continues to help His servant as long as the servant continues to help his brother. Whoever sets out on a path seeking knowledge, Allah will make the path to Paradise easy for him. When some people gather in a house of Allah for the recitation and teaching of the Book of Allah, tranquility descends upon them. Allah’s mercy envelops them, the angels surround them, and Allah mentions them among those who are with Him. And whoever is left behind by his own deeds, his lineage will not benefit him.”
Keeping the Company of Righteous People
Allah Almighty has said: “On that Day, except for the righteous, all friends will become enemies to one another.”
Hadith: 5
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Musa (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The example of a good and bad companion is like one who has musk and the other who kindles a fire in a furnace. The one with musk will either gift you musk, or you will buy musk from him, or at least you will get a good fragrance from him. But the one who kindles the fire will either burn your body or clothes, or you will get a bad smell from him.”
Speak Good or Remain Silent
Hadith: 6
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should
① honor the guest,
② treat relatives well,
③ speak good or remain silent.”
Giving up dispute while being right
Hadith: 7
And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Umamah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I guarantee a house in Paradise for the person who gives up dispute while being right, and I guarantee a house in the middle of Paradise for the person who does not commit a lie even in jest, and I guarantee a house in the highest part of Paradise for the person whose character is good.”
Maintaining kinship ties
Allah Almighty has said: “And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”
Hadith: 8
“And Sayyid Jarir bin Abdullah (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever does not show mercy to people, Allah Almighty will not show mercy to him.”
Protection of a Muslim’s honor
Hadith: 9
“And Sayyida Asma bint Yazid (RA) says that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever protects the honor of a brother in his absence, Allah has the right to free him from Hellfire.”
Making Things Easy for Others
Allah Almighty said: “Allah intends ease for you and does not intend hardship.”
Hadith: 10
“And Sayyiduna Abu Musa (RA) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent any of the companions for any task, he would say to them: Be a bringer of glad tidings, do not cause hatred, make things easy, and do not cause hardship or difficulty.”
Concealing Faults
Hadith: 11
And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (RA) that indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: A Muslim is the brother of another Muslim; he neither oppresses him nor abandons him to the enemy. Whoever is busy fulfilling the needs of his (Muslim) brother, Allah fulfills his needs. Whoever relieves the distress of a Muslim, Allah will relieve from him one of the great distresses of the Day of Judgment. And whoever conceals the faults of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his faults on the Day of Judgment.
Preferring Others Over Oneself
Allah Almighty has said: “They give preference to others over themselves, even though they themselves are in need.”
Hadith: 12
“Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said regarding Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them): By the One Who split the grain and the seed and created the soul! Only a superior believer will love both of them, and only a wretched and apostate (heretic) will harbor hatred and enmity towards them, because love for both is a means of drawing closer to Allah, and hatred and enmity towards them is a sign of being outside the religion. What has happened to those people who mention the two brothers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, two ministers, two companions, two chiefs of Quraysh, and two fathers of the Muslims with offensive words? I disassociate myself from those who speak ill of these two, and I will punish them for it.”
Dealing in the Best Manner
“Allah Almighty has said: And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth humbly, and when the ignorant address them, they say peace.”
Hadith: 13
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (RA) that a companion said: O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I have some relatives who I maintain ties with, but they sever ties with me. I treat them well, but they treat me badly. I show patience and forbearance towards them, but they behave ignorantly towards me. You ﷺ said: If that is indeed as you say, then it is as if you are putting hot ashes in their mouths. Against them, there will always be a helper from Allah for you, as long as your behavior remains like this.”
Giving Gifts
Allah Almighty has said: “And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with what is better than it, or (at least) return it equally. Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant.” (This verse is often interpreted to mean exchanging gifts as well, as it fosters love and affection.)
Hadith: 14
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira رضي الله عنه that the Prophet ﷺ said: Exchange gifts among yourselves, for it creates mutual love.”
Mediating Reconciliation
Allah Almighty has said: “And reconciliation is better.”
Hadith: 15
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Darda رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Shall I tell you something that is better than fasting, prayer, and charity? They said: Why not, O Messenger of Allah! He ﷺ said: Reconciling between people, for discord among people destroys and ruins.”
What you like for yourself, like that for others
Hadith: 16
“And Hazrat Anas رضي الله عنه narrates from the Noble Prophet ﷺ, who said: None of you can be a true believer until he likes for his brother what he likes for himself.”
Fulfilling the Needs of the Needy
Allah Almighty has said: “They ask you what they should spend. Say, ‘Whatever you spend of good is for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler. And whatever you do of good – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it.'”
Hadith: 17
“And Sayyiduna Abu Darda (RA) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘Look for me among the weak. Indeed, your help is due to your weak ones, and your provision is because of them.'”
Visiting the Sick
Hadith: 18
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whoever visits a sick person or visits his brother purely for the sake of Allah, a caller calls out loudly: “May you be blessed, may your walking be pleasant, may you have a place in Paradise.”‘”
Gentleness
Allah Almighty has said: “If you turn away from those people while hoping for mercy from your Lord, then say to them a good word.”
Hadith: 19
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Shall I not inform you of the people upon whom the Hellfire is forbidden or the Hellfire is forbidden upon them? It is forbidden upon every person who is close to people, gentle, and makes things easy.”
Avoid Enmity
Allah Almighty has said: “O you who have believed! Do not take as allies those other than the believers; do you wish to offer Allah an excuse against yourselves? Indeed, the disbelievers are ever to you a clear enemy. Their hatred has already appeared from their mouths, but what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason.”
Hadith: 20
“It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: On Mondays and Thursdays, the gates of Paradise are opened, and all those who do not associate partners with Allah are forgiven, except for two persons who hold grudges against each other; their forgiveness is not granted. The command is given to grant them respite until they reconcile, grant them respite until they reconcile, grant them respite until they reconcile.”
Do not envy
Allah Almighty has said: “Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty?”
Hadith: 21
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Faith and envy cannot coexist in the heart of a person.”
Do Not Find Fault
Allah Almighty has said: “O you who have believed! Let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them, nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not defame one another, nor insult one another by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after faith. And whoever does not repent – then it is those who are the wrongdoers.”
Hadith: 22
“The Noble Prophet ﷺ advised Muawiyah ibn Abu Sufyan (RA) saying: If you seek out the faults of people, you will spoil them or bring them close to spoilage.”
Do Not Backbite or Gossip
Allah Almighty has said: “And do not backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it.”
Hadith: 23
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do you know what backbiting is? The Companions (RA) said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He ﷺ said: Mentioning your brother in a manner which he dislikes is backbiting. Someone asked: What if my brother actually has that fault? He said: If what you say about him is true, then you have backbitten him, and if it is not true, then you have slandered him.”
Do Not Show Off Your Charity
Allah Almighty has said: “O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury as does one who spends his wealth to be seen by the people.”
Hadith: 24
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The one who is kind, the one who disobeys, and the habitual drinker will not enter Paradise.”
Do not consider anyone insignificant
Allah Almighty has said: “And do not turn your face away from people in arrogance, nor walk in pride on the earth. Indeed, Allah does not like the arrogant, boastful person.”
Hadith: 25
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Whoever has even an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart will not enter Paradise. A person said: (O Messenger of Allah!) A man likes his clothes to be good and his shoes to be fine, (so is this arrogance?). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is to reject the truth out of self-conceit and to despise other people.”
Avoid Offensive Speech and Insults
Allah Almighty said: “And be moderate in your pace and lower your voice; indeed, the harshest of sounds is the braying of donkeys.”
And Allah Almighty said: “Do not call each other by offensive nicknames.”
Hadith: 26
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: A believer is not one who insults, curses, uses obscene language, or speaks indecently.”
Allah Almighty has said: “And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous. Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people – and Allah loves the doers of good.”
Hadith: 27
“And Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Whoever grants respite to a needy person who is indebted to him or forgives his debt, Allah protects him from the severe heat of Hellfire. O people! Listen, the deeds of Paradise are very difficult and hard. (This phrase was repeated three times) Beware! O people! The deeds of Hellfire are easy and simple. The fortunate one is the one who avoids trials. And the most beloved sip to Allah is the sip of anger that a person drinks for the sake of Allah. Whoever restrains his anger, Allah fills his heart with faith.”
Do not interrupt the speech
Hadith: 28
“It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: It is not permissible for a Muslim to abandon his brother for more than three days. Whoever abandons him for more than three days and dies in that state, he will enter Hell.”
Protecting Others from Harm by Tongue and Hand
Hadith: 29
And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The best among the Muslims is the one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe.”
Not Causing Harm or Injury to Others
Allah Almighty said: “And those who harm believing men and believing women without any fault, they bear the burden of slander and manifest sin.”
Hadith: 30
“And it is narrated from Sayyida Aisha (RA) that the Noble Messenger ﷺ said: The worst people in the sight of Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be those from whose evil people will be afraid to meet.”
Avoiding Abusive Language
Allah Almighty has said: “And soon the wrongdoers will know what kind of final abode they will have.”
Hadith: 31
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked the noble companions: Do you know who is called bankrupt? The companions replied: In our view, the bankrupt is the one who has neither money nor possessions. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The bankrupt of my Ummah is the one who will come on the Day of Resurrection with prayers, fasting, and zakat as good deeds, but he has insulted someone, falsely accused someone, consumed someone’s wealth unjustly, shed someone’s blood, and beaten someone. Therefore, all his good deeds will be distributed among the oppressed. And if his good deeds are finished while the rights of the oppressed remain, then their sins will be placed upon him in his record of deeds, and finally, he will be thrown into Hell.”
Avoiding Joking and Excessive Talking
Hadith: 32
“And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha’laba Al-Khashani رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The most beloved to me among you and the closest to me on the Day of Resurrection will be those who have the best character among you, and the most disliked by me (and the farthest from me on the Day of Resurrection) will be those who have bad character, who speak excessively with affectation, mock others, and talk excessively.”
Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil
Allah Almighty said: “And as for the Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance, so the thunderous punishment seized them for what they used to earn.”
Hadith: 33
And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Meeting your brother with a smile, enjoining good, forbidding evil, guiding the lost traveler and the one with weak eyesight, and removing harmful things like stones, thorns, and bones from the path is charity. Also, pouring water from your bucket into your brother’s bucket is charity.
Hadith: 34
Kindness to the young and respect for the elders
And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
He is not one of us who does not have mercy on the young and does not respect the elders.
Patience in hardships
Allah Almighty has said:
“By the time, indeed mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.”
Hadith: 35
Muhaddith Albani (RA) has graded it as “Sahih”.
And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (RA) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
The believer who lives among people and patiently endures their harm has more reward than the believer who does not associate with people nor endure their harm.
Avoid Suspicion
Allah Almighty has said:
“O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.”
Hadith: 36
And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (RA) that the Noble Prophet ﷺ said:
Avoid suspicion, for suspicion is the most false of speech; do not spy on one another, do not harbor hatred against one another, but rather be servants of Allah as brothers.
Compassion
Hadith: 37
Muhaddith Al-Albani (RA) has graded it as “Hasan” (good).
And it is narrated from Hazrat Amr bin Hazm (RA), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
Whoever a believer consoles his brother in any calamity, Allah Almighty will bestow upon him a robe of honor on the Day of Resurrection.
Hadith: 38
Be one of these seven
And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Allah Almighty will grant shade under His (Throne) on the Day when there will be no shade except His shade to seven (types of) people: a just ruler, a young person who grew up in the worship of his Lord, a person whose heart is attached to the mosque, two people who love each other for the sake of Allah, meet for His sake and part for His sake, a person who is invited by a woman of beauty and position but he says: I fear Allah, a person who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has spent, and a person who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes become flooded with tears.
To forgive despite having the power to take revenge
Hadith: 39
And it is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
Whoever restrains his anger, Allah will conceal his faults. Whoever suppresses his anger despite having the power to take revenge, Allah will fill his heart with hope of mercy on the Day of Judgment. Whoever goes to fulfill the need of his brother until his need is fulfilled, Allah will keep him steadfast on the Day when people’s feet will be slipping. Bad character spoils good deeds just as vinegar spoils honey.
Providing Happiness to a Muslim
Hadith: 40
And it is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
The most beloved servants to Allah are those who are most beneficial to people. The most beloved deed to Allah Almighty is to bring happiness to a Muslim, or to remove his distress, or to pay off his debt, or to satisfy his hunger.
