Obligation of Friday Prayer
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“O you who have believed, when the call is proclaimed for the prayer on Friday, then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.”
Hadith 1 :
“Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Whoever among you comes for Friday prayer should take a bath.”
Hadith 2 :
“And it is narrated from Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Umar ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was addressing the people on Friday when a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) entered. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called out to him, ‘What kind of time is this to come?’ He replied, ‘I was busy today, and as soon as I returned home, I heard the call to prayer, so I only performed ablution and came.’ Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘You only performed ablution, while you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to command taking a bath?'”
Hadith 3 :
“And Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Umar ibn Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was delivering a sermon to the people on Friday when Hazrat Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) entered. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) reproached him saying, ‘What is wrong with the people that they delay after the Adhan?’ Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) replied, ‘O Commander of the Faithful! After hearing the Adhan, I did nothing more than perform ablution and then came.’ Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, ‘You only performed ablution? Have you not heard the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) that when any of you comes for Friday prayer, he should take a bath?'”
Taking a bath for Friday prayer is obligatory for every adult male
Hadith 4:
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: It is obligatory for every adult to perform Ghusl (ritual bath) on the day of Friday.”
Hadith 5:
“And Hazrat Aisha (RA) narrates that people used to come from the outskirts to their homes for Friday prayer, and they used to come in woolen cloaks, (on the way) dust would settle on them, causing them to emit a bad odor. One of them came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) while he was at my place, so the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: I wish you would attain cleanliness and purity for this day.”
Applying fragrance and using Miswak on Friday
Hadith 6:
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: On the day of Friday, it is obligatory for every adult to take a bath, use a miswak, and, according to one’s ability, apply perfume.”
Hadith 7:
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he mentioned the Prophet Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) command regarding bathing on the day of Friday. Tawus says: I asked Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) whether one should use perfume or oil if it is available at home? He replied, I do not know.”
Hadith 8:
“And Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Allah has a right over every Muslim that he bathes once every week, washing his head and body.”
The Reward of Coming Early for Friday Prayer
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous.”
Hadith 9 :
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: Whoever performs the ritual bath (ghusl) of janabah on Friday, then goes to the mosque, it is as if he has sacrificed a camel; and whoever goes in the second hour, it is as if he has sacrificed a cow; and whoever goes in the third hour, it is as if he has sacrificed a horned ram; and whoever goes in the fourth hour, it is as if he has sacrificed a chicken; and whoever goes in the fifth hour, it is as if he has given a charitable egg, because when the Imam comes out, the angels come to listen to the sermon (reminder).”
Remaining silent during the Friday sermon
Hadith 10 :
“And Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: When you say to your companion on Friday, ‘Be silent,’ while the Imam is delivering the sermon, then you have committed a vain act.”
The Moment of Acceptance on Friday
❀ Allah Almighty said:
“And your Lord said, ‘Call upon Me; I will respond to you.’ Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell humiliated.”
Hadith 11:
“And Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), while mentioning Friday, said: There is an hour on Friday, during which if a Muslim servant is in the state of prayer and asks Allah for anything, He will grant it to him.”
Hadith 12:
“And Hazrat Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates about the hour of Friday that I heard the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم say: It is from the time the Imam sits until the prayer is performed.”
Virtue of the Day of Friday
Hadith 13:
“And Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. On it, Adam (peace be upon him) was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise, and on it he was expelled from it.”
Guidance for this Ummah regarding the Day of Friday
Hadith 14 :
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: We are the last to come and the first on the Day of Resurrection because every nation was given a scripture before us, and we were given it after them. Then this day, which Allah has made obligatory for us, Allah has guided us for it, and people follow us in this regard. The day of worship for the Jews is the day after Friday, that is Saturday, and the day of Eid for the Christians is the day after that, that is Sunday.”
The Virtue of Going Early on Friday
Hadith 15:
“And Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: When the day of Friday comes, at the doors of the mosque, angels write down the names of those who come in order, first come first recorded. When the preacher sits on the pulpit, they roll up their records and listen to the admonition and reminder. The example of the one who comes early is like the person who sacrifices a camel, then the next is like the one who sacrifices a cow, then the next like the one who sacrifices a ram, then the next like the one who sacrifices a chicken, then the next like the one who gives an egg in charity.”
Remaining Silent During the Sermon and the Virtue of the Listener
Hadith 16:
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Whoever performs ghusl (ritual purification), then comes for the Friday prayer and prays whatever is written for him, then remains silent until the Khateeb (preacher) finishes his sermon, and then participates in the prayer with him, his sins between that Friday and the next Friday will be forgiven, plus three additional days.”
Friday Prayer is at Sunset
Hadith 17:
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with both of them) that we used to pray with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), then return and rest the camels that carried our water. Hasan says I asked Ja’far, at what time was this? He said: At the time of sunset.”
Hadith 18:
“And Hazrat Salmah bin Aku’ رضي الله عنه narrates that we used to pray with the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم on Friday at the decline of the sun. Then we would return and look for shade.”
One should sit between the two Friday sermons
Hadith 19:
“And Hazrat Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم would stand on Friday and deliver the sermon, then sit down, then stand up again, just as you do nowadays.”
Hadith 20:
“And Hazrat Jabir bin Samurah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم used to give two sermons, sit between them, recite the Quran, and advise and counsel the people.”
If engaged in trade or any occupation, then leave Friday prayer
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“And when they see some merchandise or amusement, they disperse towards it and leave you standing. Say, ‘What is with Allah is better than amusement and than merchandise, and Allah is the best of providers.'”
Hadith 21 :
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was delivering the sermon on Friday when a caravan of grain arrived from Sham. People went towards it, until only twelve men remained behind. Then this verse of Surah Al-Jumu’ah was revealed: ‘And when they see some merchandise or amusement, they disperse towards it and leave you standing.'”
Severity and Strictness Regarding Leaving Friday Prayer
Hadith 22 :
“And Abdullah bin Umar and Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with them) narrate that they heard the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم saying from the pulpit that those who abandon Friday prayer should either desist from this act or Allah will seal their hearts as a punishment for their sins. Then they will be among the heedless.”
Shortening of Friday Prayer and Khutbah
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“Allah intends ease for you and does not intend hardship for you.”
Hadith 23 :
“And Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I used to pray with the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم; his prayer was moderate and his khutbah was moderate.”
Sunnah Khutbah and Etiquettes
Hadith 24 :
And it is narrated from Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to deliver a sermon, his eyes would become red. His voice would become loud, and a state of severe anger and majesty would prevail to the extent that it seemed as if he was intimidating an army. He used to say, “The attack will be in the morning or in the evening,” and he said, “My mission and the coming of the Day of Judgment are like these two fingers,” and he would join his index and middle fingers. And he said: “After praise and prayer, indeed the best speech is the Book of Allah, and the best guidance or the best instruction and leadership is the way of Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the worst matters are newly invented matters, and every newly invented matter is misguidance.” Then he said: “I am more entitled to a person’s life (in matters concerning him) than anyone else. Whoever leaves wealth, it belongs to his heirs, and whoever leaves debt or dependents, their care is upon me, and I am responsible for them.”
Hadith 25 :
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man named Dhamad from the tribe of Dushanu’ah came to Mecca. He used to perform ruqyah (spiritual healing) for the evil eye. He heard from the foolish and simple-minded people of Mecca that Muhammad (ﷺ) was insane. So he said in his heart, if I see this man, perhaps Allah will heal him through my hands. For this, he met you and said: O Muhammad, I perform ruqyah to remove the effect of jinn, and Allah grants healing through my hands to whomever He wills. Do you desire this? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Indeed, all praise and thanks are due to Allah. We praise Him and seek His help. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomever He leaves astray, none can guide. And I bear witness that Allah is One, He has no partner, and none is worthy of worship except Him. And I bear witness that Muhammad (ﷺ) is His servant and His Messenger. After the praise and testimony, he (Dhamad) said, please repeat your words to me again. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) repeated these words three times or repeated these words three times in his presence. Then he said, I have heard the words of soothsayers, magicians, and poets, but I have never heard words like yours. These have reached the depths of the river of eloquence. Then he said, extend your hand, I pledge allegiance to you for Islam. So he gave you his pledge of allegiance. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: I also take the pledge of allegiance on behalf of your people. He said: I pledge allegiance on behalf of my people as well. After that, you sent a small army (a detachment). When they passed by the tribe of Dhamad, the commander of the army said: Have you taken anything from these people? One soldier said: I took a water container from them. He said: Return it, for these people are the tribe of Dhamad.”
Hadith 26 :
“And Abu Wa’il said: Hazrat Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon in front of us. It was extremely brief and extremely eloquent. When he came down from the pulpit, we said: Abu Yaqzan! You gave a very impactful and very brief sermon, I wish you had spoken a little longer (taken more time). He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: The lengthening of a person’s prayer and the shortening of his sermon is a sign of his wisdom. Therefore, make the prayer long and the sermon short, and there is no doubt that some speech is like magic.”
Hadith 27 :
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Uday bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man addressed the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in his presence and said: Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has attained guidance and righteousness. And whoever disobeys them or has disobeyed both of them has gone astray. Upon this, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: You are a very bad orator, say it like this: Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger (he has gone astray).”
Hadith 28:
“And Safwan bin Ya’li narrates from his father that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) reciting the noble verse نَادَوْا يَا مَالِكُ from the pulpit.”
Hadith 29:
Whoever follows the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on Friday, while he recites it on the pulpit, every Friday
“And the sister of Umarah bint Abdur Rahman narrates that I memorized Surah Qaf and the Glorious Quran on Friday from the tongue of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). He used to recite it on the pulpit every Friday.”
Hadith 30:
“And Hazrat Amarah bin Ruwaybah (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Bishr bin Marwan raising both hands on the pulpit and said: May Allah spoil these two hands, I have seen the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) not gesture more than this with his hand, and he pointed with his index finger.”
Reciting Tahiyyatul Masjid during the sermon
Hadith 31:
”And it is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم was delivering the Friday sermon when a man came. The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم asked him: O so-and-so! Have you prayed? He said, No. The Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم said: Get up and pray.“
Teaching Religion During the Sermon
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
”Why is it that a group from every sect does not go forth to gain understanding in religion, so that when they return to their people, they may warn them, so that they may fear (Allah).“
Hadith 32 :
“And Hazrat Abu Rafi’ رضي الله عنه narrates that I reached the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم while he was delivering a sermon. I said, O Messenger of Allah! A stranger has come to ask about his religion; he does not know what his religion is. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم turned towards me, left his sermon, and came to me. A chair was brought, which I think had iron legs, and the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم sat on it and began teaching me from what Allah had taught him. Then he returned to his sermon and completed it.”
Which Surahs should be recited in the Friday Prayer
Hadith 33:
وعن ابن أبى رافع قال: استخلف مروان أبا هريرة على المدينة ، وخرج إلى مكة، فصلى لنا أبو هريرة الجمعة ، فقرأ بعد سورة الجمعة فى الركعة الآخرة، ﴿إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ﴾ He said: I caught up with Abu Huraira when he was leaving! I said to him: You recited two Surahs that Ali ibn Abi Talib used to recite in Kufa. Abu Huraira said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, recite them on Friday
“And the son of Abu Rafi narrates that Marwan, may Allah have mercy on him, appointed Hazrat Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, as his deputy or representative in Medina and went himself to Mecca. Hazrat Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, led us in the Friday prayer and in the second Rak’ah after reciting Surah Al-Jumu’ah (which is recited in the first Rak’ah), he recited ﴿إِذَا جَاءَكَ الْمُنَافِقُونَ﴾. When Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, returned from Friday prayer, I met him and said to him, you recited those two Surahs which Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, used to recite in Kufa. Abu Huraira, may Allah be pleased with him, said, I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, reciting these Surahs on Friday.”
Hadith 34:
وعن النعمان بن بشير قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقرأ فى العيدين، وفى الجمعة ﴿سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى﴾ and ﴿هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ﴾, he said: And if Eid and Friday coincide on the same day, then these are also recited in both prayers.
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Nu’man bin Bashir (RA) that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) used to recite ﴿سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْأَعْلَى﴾ and ﴿هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ﴾ in the two Eids and on Friday, and if Eid and Friday coincided on the same day, he would recite them in both prayers.”
Hadith 35:
“And Dhahak bin Qais wrote a letter to Hazrat Nu’man bin Bashir (RA) asking which Surah the Prophet (PBUH) used to recite on Friday besides Surah Al-Jumu’ah. He replied: He used to recite ﴿هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ الْغَاشِيَةِ﴾.”
Which Surah should be recited on Friday (in Fajr prayer)

وعن ابن عباس أن النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يقرأ فى صلوة الفجر، يوم الجمعة ﴿الم تَنزِيلُ السَّجْدَةِ﴾ and ﴿هَلْ أَتَىٰ عَلَى الْإِنسَانِ حِينٌ مِّنَ الدَّهْرِ﴾ and that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم used to recite, in the Friday prayer, Surah Al-Jumu’ah and Al-Munafiqun
“And it is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنه that the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم used to recite ﴿الم تَنزِيلُ السَّجْدَةِ﴾ and ﴿هَلْ أَتَىٰ عَلَى الْإِنسَانِ حِينٌ مِّنَ الدَّهْرِ﴾ in the Fajr prayer on Friday. And the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم used to recite Surah Al-Jumu’ah and Surah Al-Munafiqun in the Friday prayer.”
Prayer after Friday Prayer
Hadith 37:
And it is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “When you have completed the Friday prayer, then pray four rak’ahs after it.”
Hadith 38:
And Hazrat Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reports that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “When you pray after Friday prayer, then pray four rak’ahs.”
Hadith 39:
“And Nafi reports that when Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) would finish the Friday prayer, he would return to his home and pray two rak’ahs. Then he (Ibn Umar) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to do the same.”
Hadith 40:
“And it is narrated from Umar bin Ata bin Abi Khawar that Nafi bin Jubair sent him to Saib ibn Akht Namir to ask him about what he had seen in the prayer of Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Saib said: Yes, I prayed Friday prayer with Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Maqsura, and when the Imam gave the salam, I stood up and prayed my prayer in my place. When Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came inside, he called me and said, ‘Do not do what you did again. When you finish the Friday prayer, do not join it with any other prayer until you have talked or left that place. Because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded us not to join one prayer with another until we have talked or left that place.'”
Sending blessings (Durood Sharif) on Friday
❀ Allah Almighty has said:
“Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.”
