Five Important Funeral Issues with Authentic Hadith Evidence

1 — Reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah Silently in the Funeral Prayer

Hadith:
Abu Umāmah ibn Sahl (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Sunnah method of the funeral prayer is:

  • After the first takbīr, the imam recites Sūrat al-Fātiḥah silently,
  • Then he says three more takbīrs,
  • And with the last takbīr, he ends with salām.

(Sunan al-Nasa’i 1991 — graded sahih by Ibn Ḥajar)

2 — Permissibility of Loud Recitation in the Funeral Prayer

Hadith:
ʿAwf ibn Mālik (رضي الله عنه) said:
The Prophet ﷺ recited a dua in the funeral prayer which I memorized, and I wished that it had been for me.
(Sahih Muslim 963)

Deduction:
Since the companion heard and memorized the dua, it shows the imam may sometimes recite audibly.

3 — Standing When a Funeral Passes By

Hadith:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When you see a funeral, stand up, and whoever follows it should not sit until the body is placed down.”
(Sahih Bukhari 1310, Sahih Muslim 959)

4 — Was Standing Later Abrogated or Both Made Permissible?

Difference of opinion among scholars:

  • Some hold that the command to stand was abrogated.
  • Others say both standing and remaining seated are permissible.

Supporting Reports:

  • ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet ﷺ used to stand until the burial, then sat after a Jewish scholar passed by and said they also did so. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Sit down and oppose them.”
    (Abu Dawood 3176)
  • ʿAli (رضي الله عنه): The Prophet ﷺ used to stand, so we stood, then he began sitting, so we sat.
(Ibn Majah 1454, Abu Dawood 3175)
  • Incident of al-Ḥasan (رضي الله عنه) and Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما): al-Ḥasan stood when a funeral passed, Ibn ʿAbbās did not. He explained: “The Prophet ﷺ used to stand, then he sat.”
    (al-Nasa’i 1295)
