🕰️ Practical Teaching of Prayer Timings and the Prophet ﷺ’s Guidance 🕰️
❖ The Practical Instruction of Prayer Timings by the Prophet ﷺ
Sayyiduna Buraidah رضي الله عنه narrates that a man once asked the Prophet ﷺ about the timings of the prayers. The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“Pray with us for these two days.”
On the first day:
- When the sun began to decline, the Prophet ﷺ instructed Sayyiduna Bilal رضي الله عنه to call the Adhan for Dhuhr.
- Asr was performed when the sun was still high, white, and bright.
- Maghrib was offered immediately after sunset.
- Isha was prayed when the twilight had disappeared.
- Fajr was prayed at the beginning of dawn.
All prayers on the first day were offered at their earliest time.
On the second day:
- Dhuhr was delayed until the weather cooled down.
- Asr was offered later than the previous day.
- Maghrib was performed before the twilight disappeared.
- Isha was prayed after one-third of the night had passed.
- Fajr was performed when the morning had become bright.
At the end, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The time of your prayers lies between these two timings that you have observed.”
(Sahih Muslim, Al-Masajid, Chapter: Timings of the Five Prayers, 316)
❖ Clear Explanation of Prayer Timings by the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The time for Dhuhr begins when the sun passes its zenith and lasts until a person’s shadow becomes equal to his height.
The time for Asr remains until the sun turns yellow.
The time for Maghrib lasts until the twilight disappears.
The time for Isha continues until midnight.
The time for Fajr begins at the break of dawn and lasts until sunrise.”
(Sahih Muslim, Al-Masajid, Chapter: Timings of the Five Prayers, 216)
📝 Explanation:
The term “twilight (shafaq)” refers to the redness that appears in the western sky after sunset.
❖ The Prophet ﷺ Used to Pray Fajr in Darkness
Sayyidah Aisha رضي الله عنها narrates:
“When the Prophet ﷺ prayed Fajr, the women would leave wrapped in their cloaks and would not be recognized due to darkness.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 768; Sahih Muslim: 546)
This shows that the Prophet ﷺ used to offer Fajr in darkness, at its earliest time, even though its time extends until sunrise.
❖ Adjusting Dhuhr Time According to Weather
While traveling during summer, when the Mu’adhdhin intended to give the Adhan, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Wait until it cools down, for the intensity of heat is from the boiling of Hellfire, so delay Dhuhr until it cools.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 935; Sahih Muslim: 616)
Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه narrates:
“We would wait until the shadows of the hills appeared.”
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported:
“When the heat is intense, pray Dhuhr at a cooler time, for the heat is from the intensity of Hell.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 335; Sahih Muslim: 516)
Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه said:
“The Prophet ﷺ would pray earlier in winter and delay in summer.”
(Sunan al-Nasa’i, Ta’jeel al-Dhuhr fi al-Bard: 005)
❖ Timing of Jumu’ah Prayer
Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه said:
“The Prophet ﷺ used to pray Jumu’ah after the sun had passed its zenith.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 409)
Sayyiduna Sahl ibn Sa’d رضي الله عنه said:
“After Jumu’ah, we would eat lunch and take a siesta.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 939; Sahih Muslim: 958)
Sayyiduna Anas رضي الله عنه also stated:
“The Prophet ﷺ would offer Jumu’ah early in winter and later in summer.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 609)
❖ The Time and Importance of Asr Prayer
Sayyiduna Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه said:
“The Prophet ﷺ used to pray Asr when the sun was still high. A person could go to Awali (a distance of 4 miles from Madinah) and the sun would still be high.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 550; Sahih Muslim: 126)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The hypocrite waits for the sun to become yellow, then he hastily pecks four Rak’ahs, remembering Allah very little.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 865)
❖ End Time for Fajr and Asr Prayers
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever catches one Rak’ah of Fajr before sunrise has caught the prayer, and whoever catches one Rak’ah of Asr before sunset has caught the prayer.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 579; Sahih Muslim: 806)
📝 Explanation:
This allowance is only for those who are delayed due to a legitimate Islamic excuse.
Delaying Salah out of laziness is a sign of hypocrisy.
❖ Time of Maghrib Prayer
Sayyiduna Salamah رضي الله عنه said:
“We used to pray Maghrib with the Prophet ﷺ immediately after sunset.”
(Sahih Bukhari: 165)
❖ Time of Isha Prayer
Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما said:
“One night we waited for the Prophet ﷺ to lead Isha. When one-third of the night had passed, he came out and said:
‘If it were not difficult for my Ummah, I would have led Salah at this time.’”
(Sahih Muslim: 936)
The Prophet ﷺ:
“Disliked sleeping before Isha and talking after it.”
(Sahih Muslim: 226)
Sayyiduna Jabir رضي الله عنه said:
“The Prophet ﷺ would sometimes pray Isha early and sometimes late depending on the congregation.”
(Sahih Muslim: 646)
❖ The Virtue of Praying at the Earliest Time
Sayyidah Aisha رضي الله عنها said:
“The Prophet ﷺ never delayed any prayer till its last time until his passing.”
(Al-Sunan al-Kubra by Bayhaqi 1/534; Al-Mustadrak by Hakim 1/091 – Hakim & Dhahabi: Authentic)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Praying at the beginning of its time is the most virtuous deed.”
(Tirmidhi: 170)
Sayyiduna Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه said:
“The Prophet ﷺ said:
‘If you have Imams who delay the prayer, then perform your prayer at its time. If you happen to catch the congregational prayer later, then pray it again as voluntary.’”
(Sahih Muslim: 846)
Sayyiduna Ubadah ibn Samit رضي الله عنه said:
“The Prophet ﷺ said:
‘After me there will be Imams who will not pray on time. You should perform your Salah at its proper time even if you have to pray alone.’
A man asked: ‘Should we also pray with them?’
He ﷺ replied: ‘Yes, if you wish.’”
(Abu Dawood: 434)
