❓ Question:

Are women required to pay zakāt on the jewelry they wear at home? If yes, what is the Sharʿī evidence?

Some scholars say that zakāt is obligatory every year on such jewelry, while others say it is not obligatory. Some also argue that paying zakāt once on jewelry is sufficient, citing the following ḥadīth as evidence:

Umm Salamah (RA) said:
“I used to wear gold bangles. I asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ‘Is this hoarded treasure (kanz) that will bring punishment?’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied: ‘When you have paid its zakāt, then it is no longer kanz.’”
(al-Mustadrak lil-Ḥākim 1/390, Fatḥ al-Bārī 4/13, Abū Dāwūd, Kitāb az-Zakāh, Bāb al-Kanz Mā Huwa wa Zakāt al-Ḥulī)

✅ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!

◈ Zakāt is obligatory on gold and silver jewelry if it reaches the niṣāb (minimum threshold).
◈ The very ḥadīth you mentioned is evidence that zakāt is due on jewelry.
◈ Zakāt must be paid every year as long as the jewelry remains above the niṣāb amount.
◈ If the jewelry falls below the niṣāb, then zakāt is no longer obligatory.

📏 Niṣāb Clarification

◈ Gold: 20 dīnār = approximately 7.5 tolas
◈ Silver: 200 dirhams = approximately 52.5 tolas

Hādhā mā ʿindī, wallāhu aʿlam biṣ-ṣawāb.
