❖ Zakat Is Obligatory Only on Camels, Cows, and Sheep/Goats Among Livestock ❖
✍ Written by: Imran Ayub Lahori

✿ Introduction

Among all types of animals, Zakat is only obligatory on camels, cows (including buffaloes), and sheep/goats. This ruling is firmly established in the Qur’an and Sunnah, and applies under specific conditions related to their care and usage.

❖ Conditions for Zakat on Livestock

For Zakat to become obligatory on livestock, the following condition must be fulfilled:

➤ The animals must predominantly graze on natural pasture, such as mountains, fields, or wilderness, and not be raised primarily on stall-fed fodder or domestic feed.

This is known as “Sāʾimah” — i.e., animals that graze freely for most of the year.

❖ Zakat Applies Only to Specific Livestock Types

✔ The obligation of Zakat applies only to the following livestock:

  1. Camels (الإبل)
  2. Cows (البقر) – including buffaloes by consensus
  3. Sheep and Goats (الغنم)

This is because the texts of the Qur’an and Hadith specifically mention only these animals, and there is no clear textual evidence making Zakat obligatory on any other type of animal.

❖ What About Horses?

There is a difference of opinion among scholars regarding Zakat on horses, but:

✔ The stronger opinion is that Zakat is not obligatory on horses, unless they are intended for trade—in which case they would fall under the category of trading goods, not livestock per se.

✅ Conclusion

➤ Zakat is obligatory only on camels, cows, and sheep/goats among livestock.
➤ It is further conditional on the animals being free-grazing (سائمة).
➤ There is no Zakat on animals that are kept on domestic feed or animals not specified in the texts, such as horses (in most cases).
