Condition of Wudu for Tawaf – Shar‘i Evidence and Ahadith

Question
Is wudu a condition for performing tawaf?
Answer
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba’d!
1. Evidence from Hadith
Performing wudu for tawaf is necessary because the hadith likens tawaf to Salah:
«اَلطَّوَافُ بِالْبَيْتِ صَلٰوۃٌ»
(Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, Vol. 1, p. 451)
“Tawaf around the Ka‘bah is Salah.”
Since wudu is a condition for Salah, it becomes a condition for tawaf as well.
2. Supporting Principle
Based on the same principle, wudu is also considered necessary for Salat al-Janazah (funeral prayer), because this worship has also been named as Salah.
Just as one cannot enter Salah without wudu, one cannot lawfully perform tawaf without it.
Conclusion
Tawaf requires wudu as a condition, and performing tawaf without wudu is invalid.
