✍ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
❖ Prohibition of Fasting Without the Husband’s Consent
Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
لا يحل للمرأة تصوم وزوجها شاهد إلا بإذنه
“It is not permissible for a woman to fast while her husband is present (at home) except with his permission.”
In the narration from Sunan Abī Dāwūd, the following addition is found:
فى غير رمضان
“(This applies) to days outside of Ramadan.”

❖ Summary of the Ruling
✅ This ḥadīth establishes that a wife may not observe a voluntary (nafl) fast while her husband is present at home, unless he grants her permission.
⚠️ This restriction does not apply to the obligatory fasts of Ramadan, but only to voluntary fasts outside of Ramadan.
