❖ Performing Salah in the Presence of a Valid Excuse
Written by: Imran Ayub Lahori
✦ The General Rule: Salah Must Be Performed on Time
Except in the presence of a valid excuse, it is obligatory to perform every prayer within its appointed time. As the Prophet ﷺ said:
“صل الصلاة لوقتها”
“Perform the prayer at its (prescribed) time.”
[Muslim 648]
✦ Scholarly Consensus
Imam Nawawi (رحمه الله) writes:
“It is unanimously agreed upon that it is not permissible to delay Salah until sunrise or sunset deliberately without a valid excuse.”
[Sharh Muslim 3/115]
❖ Evidence from Authentic Ahadith
➊ Hadith of Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه):
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“من أدرك من الصبح ركعة قبل أن تطلع الشمس فقد أدرك الصبح، ومن أدرك ركعة من العصر قبل أن تغرب الشمس فقد أدرك العصر”
“Whoever catches one Rak‘ah of the Fajr prayer before sunrise has caught the Fajr, and whoever catches one Rak‘ah of Asr before sunset has caught the Asr.”
[Bukhari 579; Muslim 608; Abu Dawood 412; Tirmidhi 186; Nasa’i 1/257; Ibn Majah 1122; Darimi 1/277; Abu ‘Awanah 1/358; Sharh Ma‘ani al-Athar 1/90; Bayhaqi 1/367]
➋ Hadith of Aisha (رضي الله عنها):
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“من أدرك من العصر سجدة قبل أن تغرب الشمس، أو من الصبح قبل أن تطلع الشمس، فقد أدركها”
“Whoever catches a prostration (i.e., a Rak‘ah) of the Asr before the sun sets, or of Fajr before the sun rises, has caught that prayer.”
[Ahmad 6/78; Muslim 609; Nasa’i 1/273; Ibn Majah 700; Bayhaqi 1/378; Abu ‘Awanah 1/374]
➤ In this context, the word “سجدة” (prostration) refers to a Rak‘ah.
✦ Key Ruling Derived:
If a person manages to perform one Rak‘ah of Fajr before sunrise, or Asr before sunset, they are considered to have caught the prayer.
✔ This view is held by Imam Shafi‘i, Imam Ahmad, and other leading scholars.
❖ Contrasting View: Hanafi Position
According to Imam Abu Hanifah (رحمه الله):
◉ This allowance applies only to Asr, not Fajr.
◉ If Fajr is not fully completed before sunrise, it becomes invalid, even if one Rak‘ah was performed beforehand.
➤ Their argument is based on the general prohibition of prayer at sunrise, but that prohibition is qualified by the specific Hadiths cited earlier.
✦ Preferred Opinion (راجح)
✔ The opinion of Imam Shafi‘i (رحمه الله) is more correct and better supported by authentic narrations.
✦ Endorsements from Classical Scholars:
✔ Ibn Hajar (رحمه الله): Supports the opinion that one Rak‘ah before time ends is sufficient.
[Fath al-Bari 2/250]
✔ Imam Shawkani (رحمه الله): Gives preference to this view.
[Nayl al-Awtar 1/482]
✔ ‘Allamah Abdur Rahman Mubarakpuri (رحمه الله): Agrees with the same.
[Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi 1/581]
✔ Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله): Strongly defends this view and refutes the opposing opinion.
[I‘lam al-Muwaqqi‘in 2/341–344]
✔ Conclusion:
◈ The primary rule is to perform Salah within its fixed time.
◈ In the presence of a valid excuse, if even one Rak‘ah is performed before the time ends, the prayer is considered valid and fulfilled on time.
◈ This applies to both Fajr and Asr, based on clear and authentic evidence.
◈ Deliberately delaying prayer beyond its time without excuse is unanimously impermissible.
