Western Freedom vs. Islamic Values: A Fact-Based Analysis
❖ The Real Issue: Dress or Corrupt Mindset?
In Pakistan, whenever there is talk about living in accordance with modesty and Islamic teachings, liberal and secular circles object by claiming that the real problem is not clothing or restrictions, but rather a “dirty gaze” and “corrupt mentality.” They argue that if freedom of interaction between genders is promoted, social behaviors will evolve, and the sexual allure will diminish.
But is this claim supported by facts? To assess this, we examine the state of Western societies, particularly Europe, the USA, and the UK, in light of reports by the BBC and other credible sources.
❖ Sexual Violence Against Women in Europe
According to a 2014 report by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, nearly one-third of women in EU member states (approximately 62 million) have experienced physical or sexual violence since the age of 15.
The study, based on interviews with 42,000 women, is considered the largest research project on this subject to date.
➡ These statistics challenge the Western belief that when everything is openly accessible, morality automatically follows.
➡ In reality, increased freedom correlates with increased aggression and perversion.
❖ The Situation of Sexual Crimes in the USA
According to a 2010 report:
◈ Every minute, 25 people are subjected to sexual assault or violence in the United States.
◈ One million women were raped in a single year.
◈ Over six million individuals were stalked.
◈ 120,000 individuals reported being sexually assaulted by their partners.
Further surveys reveal:
◈ 1 in 5 women in the U.S. experiences sexual assault in her lifetime.
◈ 1 in 5 female university students are sexually assaulted during their education.
◈ Only 12% of sexual assaults are ever reported to police.
Some argue that such cases in Pakistan go unreported due to fear—but the same reality exists in America, where 90% of cases remain unreported.
❖ Sexual Crimes Within the U.S. Military
The military is seen as a disciplined institution, yet data tells a different story:
◈ Since 2006, there has been a 30% increase in sexual crimes and a 43% rise in child abuse cases within the U.S. military.
◈ A 2003 survey revealed that 30% of retired female soldiers had been raped during service.
◈ The U.S. Department of Defense reported in 2009 that 90% of sexual assaults in the military go unreported.
All of this occurs in a country that champions women’s freedom and sexual liberation.
❖ Child Sexual Abuse in the United Kingdom
According to British charity ChildLine, in 2009:
◈ From 2004 to 2009, sexual abuse of children by men increased fivefold.
◈ In 2008, over 16,000 children contacted ChildLine for help; 2,142 accused women of harassment—a 132% increase from 2004.
◈ In 2013, the Oxford grooming scandal exposed a gang that sexually abused at least 273 girls over 16 years.
These events unfolded in a society that prides itself on freedom.
❖ The Real Cause: Human Nature or Societal Repression?
To claim that sexual crimes stem solely from restrictive environments contradicts the facts. The rise in sexual violence despite Western freedom proves that the root cause lies not in social suppression, but in unregulated human desires.
When even President Obama admits that American society does not strongly condemn sexual assault, one must ask:
Can liberalism and absolute freedom truly guarantee women’s safety?
❖ Two Paths: Islamic Values or the Western Model?
The ultimate question is: Which path should we choose?
➤ Should we adopt the Western model promoted by NGOs and strive to make Pakistan resemble Europe?
➤ Or should we continue the struggle for a modest and morally upright society, guided by Islamic teachings?
The choice is in our hands.
