❖ Performing Two Rak‘ahs Between Every Adhan and Iqamah
Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mughaffal (رضي الله عنه), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“بين كل آذانين صلاة”
“Between every two calls (i.e., Adhan and Iqamah) there is a prayer.”
However, on the third repetition, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“لمن شاء”
“For whoever wishes to do so.”
[Bukhari: 624, Book of Adhan: Chapter on the interval between Adhan and Iqamah; Muslim: 838; Abu Dawood: 1283; Tirmidhi: 185; Nasai: 2/29]
❖ Meaning of “Adhanayn” (Two Adhans)
The term “آذانين” (Adhanayn) used in the Hadith refers to Adhan and Iqamah, not two actual Adhans. This usage is in line with Arabic idiomatic expression, where dual form is used figuratively. For example:
- The Sun and Moon are referred to as Qamarayn
- Dhuhr and Asr prayers as ‘Asrayn
[Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi: 1/573; Al-Rawdah al-Nadiyyah: 1/304]
❖ Commentary by Scholars
Ibn Hajar (رحمه الله) explains:
The prayer legislated between Adhan and Iqamah refers to a non-obligatory (nafl) prayer.
