❖ Ruling on the Jumu‘ah Prayer for One Who Catches a Single Rak‘ah

❖ Whoever Catches One Rak‘ah of Jumu‘ah, His Jumu‘ah is Valid
➊ Narration of Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
من أدرك ركعة من صلاة الجمعة أو غيرها فقد أدرك الصلاة
“Whoever catches one rak‘ah of the Jumu‘ah prayer or any other prayer, indeed he has caught the full prayer.”

➋ Narration of Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
من أدرك من الجمعة ركعة فليصل إليها أخرى
“Whoever catches one rak‘ah of Jumu‘ah should complete it with another.”

➌ Another narration from Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه):
من أدرك من الصلاة ركعة فقد أدرك
“Whoever catches one rak‘ah of any prayer, indeed he has caught the (complete) prayer.”
[Sahih: Sahih Ibn Majah: 921 | Irwa’ al-Ghalil: 3/87 | Sahih Abu Dawud: 1026 | Ibn Majah: 1122]
➍ A similar narration:
من أدرك من صلاة الجمعة ركعة فقد أدرك
“Whoever catches one rak‘ah of the Jumu‘ah prayer, indeed he has caught the full prayer.”

• Shaykh Albani (رحمه الله) considered this narration with the word “Jumu‘ah” shādh (anomalous).
• However, Shaykh Muhammad Subhi Hasan Hallaq classified it as Sahih,

❖ Conclusion from the Ahadith:
✔ Whoever catches one rak‘ah of the Jumu‘ah prayer has indeed caught the prayer.
✔ This also shows that the khutbah is not a condition for Jumu‘ah to be valid if at least one rak‘ah is attained.
❖ Opinions of the Scholars
✔ Imam Abu Hanifah (رحمه الله), Imam al-Shafiʿi (رحمه الله), and Imam Ahmad (رحمه الله) all preferred this view.

✔ Shaykh Siddiq Hasan Khan (رحمه الله) also states:
➤ The khutbah is not a condition, and whoever catches one rak‘ah, his Jumu‘ah is valid.
[Al-Rawḍah al-Nadiyyah: 1/354]
✅ Key Rulings:
❖ Catching one rak‘ah before the Imam completes it makes the Jumu‘ah prayer valid.
❖ The khutbah is not a strict prerequisite for the individual in such a case.
❖ After joining, he must complete only one more rak‘ah, not four as in Zuhr.
