Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ Introduction

Caring for orphans is a greatly emphasized act in Islam, full of reward and mercy. Among the many ways to show kindness is to gently place one’s hand over the head of an orphan, a gesture that symbolizes compassion, affection, and recognition.

✿ Prophetic Practice

After the martyrdom of Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه, the Prophet ﷺ expressed his love and care for Jaʿfar’s children.

Narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took ʿAbdullāh, the son of Jaʿfar رضي الله عنه, and:

“He passed his hand over his head three times and each time said:”
اللَّهُمَّ اخْلُفْ جَعْفَرًا فِي وَلَدِهِ

“O Allah! Be the successor of Jaʿfar in his children.”
