✍ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori

❖ Preaching and Admonition During the Khutbah

In the ḥadīth narrated by Ḥaḍrat Jābir bin Samurah (رضي الله عنه), the following words are found:

كان يقرأ القرآن ويذكر الناس
“The Prophet ﷺ used to recite the Qur’an and admonish the people (during the sermon).”
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ Abī Dāwūd: 969 | Kitāb al-Ṣalāh: Bāb al-Khuṭbah Qā’iman | Abū Dāwūd: 1094]

❖ Key Insight

☞ It becomes clear from this narration that:

Friday sermon (Khuṭbah al-Jumuʿah) is not merely a recital of a few set Arabic phrases.
Rather, it includes daʿwah (inviting to good), guidance, and moral exhortation.
✔ Qur’anic recitation
✔ Advising the audience
✔ Providing religious motivation
All form an essential part of the sermon.

Therefore, the khutbah should not be treated as a mere ritual.
It is a means of reviving faith and enlightening hearts through beneficial reminders and relevant Qur’anic messages.
