❖ Timing of Jumu‘ah Prayer and the Ruling on Offering It Before Zenith (Zawāl)
✍ Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
❖ The Time for Jumu‘ah Is the Same as That of Ẓuhr
There is no disagreement among scholars that the prescribed time for Jumu‘ah is the time of Ẓuhr, as Jumu‘ah serves as a replacement for the Ẓuhr prayer. However, scholars have differed on the permissibility of offering Jumu‘ah before the sun crosses the zenith (zawāl).
❖ Evidences for Permissibility of Pre-Zawāl Jumu‘ah
➊ Narration of Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ (رضي الله عنه)
كنا نجمع مع رسول الله إذا زالت الشمس ثم نرجع نتبع الفي
“We used to offer Jumu‘ah with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when the sun had passed its zenith, then we would return and look for shade.”
In another narration:
ثم ننصرف وليس للحيطان ظل نستظل به
“We would return and find no shade along the walls that we could rest under.”
[Bukhari: 4168 | Muslim: 859, 860 | Abu Dawud: 1085 | Ibn Majah: 1100 | Nasa’i: 3/100 | Dārimī: 1/363 | Ibn Abi Shaybah: 1/207 | Ahmad: 4/46 | Bayhaqi: 3/190]
➋ Narration of Anas (رضي الله عنه)
كان رسول الله يصلى الجمعة حين تميل الشمس
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to offer the Jumu‘ah prayer when the sun declined (zawāl).”
[Ahmad: 3/128 | Bukhari: 904 | Abu Dawud: 1084 | Tirmidhi: 503 | Bayhaqi: 3/190 | Sharḥ al-Sunnah: 2/572]
➌ Narration of Jabir (رضي الله عنه)
ثم نذهب إلى جمالنا فنريحها حين تزول الشمس
“We would then go to our camels and rest them when the sun was declining (zawāl).”
[Ahmad: 3/331 | Muslim: 858 | Nasa’i: 3/100]
➍ Narration of Sahl ibn Saʿd (رضي الله عنه)
ما كنا نقيل ولا نتغدى إلا بعد الجمعة
“We would not take a midday nap or eat lunch except after Jumu‘ah.”
[Bukhari: 939 | Muslim: 859 | Abu Dawud: 1086 | Tirmidhi: 524 | Ahmad: 5/336 | Ibn Majah: 1099]
These ahadith collectively indicate that Jumu‘ah was generally offered around or shortly after zawāl, with some narrations implying that the timing was close to the beginning of the Ẓuhr time, possibly even slightly before it.
❖ Scholarly Views on the Issue
◈ Majority (Jumhūr):
➤ The time for Jumu‘ah is after the sun passes the zenith (zawāl), identical to the time of Ẓuhr.
[Nayl al-Awṭār: 2/549 | Sharḥ Muslim by Nawawī: 3/413 | Al-Mughnī: 2/144 | Al-Majmūʿ: 4/511]
◈ Imam Mālik (رحمه الله):
➤ It is permissible to deliver the khutbah before zawāl.
◈ Imam Ahmad (رحمه الله):
➤ It is permissible to perform the Jumu‘ah prayer before zawāl, and this is the preferred (rājih) view, as it is closer to the practice proven in authentic ahadith.
[Tahfat al-Aḥwadhī: 3/36 | Al-Sharḥ al-Kabīr: 2/163 | Bidāyat al-Mujtahid: 1/114]
◈ Imam Ibn Ḥazm (رحمه الله):
➤ Jumu‘ah is only valid after zawāl.
[Al-Muḥallā bil-Āthār: 3/244]
◈ ʿAllāmah ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Mubārakpūrī (رحمه الله):
➤ He also supports the view that Jumu‘ah must be performed after zawāl.
❖ Rājih (Preferred) View
✔ The position of Imam Ahmad (رحمه الله) is stronger and closer to the authentic narrations,
✔ This view is also supported by Imam al-Shawkānī (رحمه الله) and Shaykh Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān (رحمه الله).
[Nayl al-Awṭār: 2/549 | Al-Sayl al-Jarrār: 1/296 | Al-Rawḍah al-Nadiyyah: 1/346]
✅ Conclusion:
➤ The majority opinion restricts Jumu‘ah to the Ẓuhr time only (i.e., after zawāl).
➤ However, based on several authentic narrations, the position of Imam Ahmad — that Jumu‘ah may be prayed slightly before zawāl — is more aligned with the Prophetic practice, especially in regions of early congregation.
