Question: Due to lack of knowledge, I wore a niqab during the performance of Umrah. What is the expiation for this?

Answer: The burqa, which is a niqab, is among the prohibited items during Ihram. Therefore, wearing it obligates expiation on the woman. The amount of expiation is to slaughter one animal or feed six poor people or fast for three days. However, the condition for this is knowledge and remembrance. If a woman, due to ignorance of the Shariah ruling, or by forgetting the state of Ihram, or by forgetting the prohibitions of Ihram, wore the burqa, then in this case, no expiation is due. Expiation is only required if it is done knowingly.
