✿ Visiting the Graveyard
Visiting the graveyard is a recommended (mustaḥabb) practice in Islam, meant to remind one of death and the Hereafter and to take heed. However, it should be done with proper Sharʿī etiquette so that it brings reward and does not incur Allah’s displeasure.
✔ Etiquette of Visiting the Graveyard:
- The intention should be to remember death and the Hereafter.
- It is recommended to pray for the deceased and seek forgiveness for them.
- One should avoid prohibited practices such as:
- Seeking help from the deceased.
- Calling upon them or exaggerating in their praise.
- Such acts may lead to Allah’s anger.
- Prescribed Supplication at the graves:
“السلام عليكم أهل الديار من المؤمنين والمسلمين، وإن شاء الله بكم لاحقون، أسأل الله لنا ولكم العافية.”
(Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of these homes among the believers and Muslims. Indeed, we shall join you, if Allah wills. I ask Allah for well-being for you and us.) - Raising hands while making duʿāʾ is permitted, as proven by the practice of ʿĀʾishah (رضي الله عنها).
- Face the Qiblah while supplicating, not the grave.
- Show respect in the graveyard:
- Do not walk between the graves wearing shoes.
- The Prophet ﷺ forbade walking over graves or fulfilling needs there.
✿ Women Visiting the Graveyard
There is a clear prohibition in Islam against women visiting graveyards.
✔ Ḥadīth of Prohibition:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“May Allah curse the women who visit the graves.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ; authenticated by al-Albānī)
✔ Reason for Prohibition:
- Fitnah for men due to women’s presence.
- Women are generally more emotional and prone to excessive grief and wailing.
- This prohibition is a mercy and protection from Allah to shield them from trials.
✔ If Done in Ignorance:
- If a woman unknowingly visited the grave, there is no expiation.
- She should repent, seek forgiveness, and resolve not to do it again.
✔ Participation in Funeral Prayers:
- Women may attend the funeral prayer (ṣalāt al-janāzah).
- However, visiting the graves is forbidden for them.
✿ Men Visiting the Graves
✔ Purpose of Reminder:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“I had previously forbidden you from visiting graves, but now visit them, for they remind you of the Hereafter.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)
✔ Initial Prohibition:
- In the early days of Islam, visiting graves was prohibited for both men and women to eliminate pre-Islamic practices.
- Later, men were permitted to visit them.
✿ Duʿāʾ:
May Allah have mercy upon all our deceased and those of all Muslims, and forgive them. Āmīn.
