The Ruling on Playing Football and Modern Boxing and Wrestling Competitions

Competitions are permissible in activities that aid in combat against disbelievers, such as horses, camels, arrows, and similar weapons of warfare—ships, tanks, submarines—whether these competitions offer prizes or not. However, for those activities that do not serve as assistance in warfare—such as football, boxing, and wrestling—if these competitions offer prizes to the winners, then they are not permissible. If they are non-prize competitions and do not distract from obligatory duties, do not lead to sin, and cause no harm or damage, then they are permissible. Otherwise, they are prohibited.
