11- The Meaning of لَا إِكْرَاهَ فِي الدِّينِ
It means that Islam is a religion which is perfect and complete in terms of evidence, proofs, and miracles, and at the same time is absolutely clear. Its foundation is intellect and insight. It is a religion exactly in accordance with nature and based on guidance and growth. Whoever adopts this religion becomes a cause not only for his own reformation but also for the reformation of others.
For the aforementioned reasons, there is no need to force anyone towards the religion of Islam. Forcing someone is done only for something that is against the truth and when a person’s heart is not ready to accept it or its arguments are hidden, unclear, and not evident. Therefore, a person can only deny Islam out of arrogance and stubbornness; otherwise, there is no room for denial because the truth (guidance) and misguidance have been clearly presented. Hence, there remains no excuse for anyone to reject it.
Allama Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him, writes under the exegesis of this verse in “Tafsir Ibn Kathir”:
“There is no need to force anyone to enter Islam, because its arguments and proofs are as clear as daylight. The person whom Allah guides, He grants him an open heart and the light of insight, so he embraces Islam with full certainty and conviction. And those who are not granted guidance from Allah, whose hearts lack insight and whose eyes and ears are deprived of seeing and hearing, forcing such a person into Islam by compulsion can never be beneficial.”
