Analyzing the Objections of Desi Atheists

When analyzing the objections raised by Desi atheists, it is essential to understand that their criticisms are often rooted in hatred for Islam, aversion to religion, and superficial reasoning, clearly lacking depth and understanding. A prime example of this is their objection based on a supposed similarity between Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:33) and Pharaoh’s threats — a comparison that exposes the flawed nature of their thinking.

The objection posited is:
“If Pharaoh’s action was oppression, why is Allah’s punishment for robbers considered justice?”
This question is fundamentally flawed and reveals a lack of intellectual maturity. To address this issue correctly, one must understand the difference between an action and its cause, intention, and context.

❖ The Fallacy of Superficial Similarity in Actions

Critics often overlook the fact that similar-looking actions can differ vastly in meaning based on their purpose and background. For instance, consider the act of killing:

  • Judicial Killing: When a judge sentences a murderer to death, it is a lawful act of justice within a legal framework.
  • Unlawful Killing: When an individual murders an innocent person without justification, it is an act of oppression.

Though the outward act may seem the same — the taking of life — the intent, authority, and context transform one into justice and the other into tyranny.

❖ Allah’s Punishment vs. Pharaoh’s Oppression

Applying this principle:

  • Allah’s Punishment:
The punishment prescribed by Allah for highway robbers in Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:33) is a just retribution for criminals who murder innocent people and loot property, thereby spreading terror and chaos. It is a deterrent rooted in protecting societal peace.
  • Pharaoh’s Threats:
In contrast, Pharaoh threatened severe punishment to people who merely believed in the truth — they caused no harm, took no lives, and committed no crimes. His actions were motivated by rejection of truth and consolidation of tyranny, making it pure oppression against the innocent.

❖ Understanding the Essence of Justice and Oppression

This brings us to a critical realization:
Objecting to an action based solely on its outward form, without examining its intention, purpose, and background, is a betrayal of intellectual honesty.
The punishments described by Allah are founded on divine justice, aimed at punishing wrongdoers appropriately. In contrast, Pharaoh’s actions were tyrannical, targeting innocent believers unjustly.

✿ Summary

❶ Atheists often ignore the distinction between an action and its intention.
❷ Punishment from Allah is justice against criminals, while Pharaoh’s acts were oppression against the innocent.
❸ This distinction is so clear that even a person with basic understanding can comprehend it.
