❖ Islamic Society and the Ideological Contradiction with Socialism ❖
✍ By: Javed Iqbal
◈ The Reality and Deceptive Impression of Socialism
The proponents of socialism cunningly attempt to create the impression that their system is the best solution to protect weaker segments of society from the oppression of capitalists. Influenced by socialist propaganda, many people begin to believe that socialism is a system fundamentally different from capitalism. However, a deep analysis reveals that socialism is merely an alternative method of achieving the same objectives as capitalism.
✔ Key Point:
Socialism is simply another form of capitalism, built upon the foundations of freedom and equality—two values for which there is no room in Islam.
◈ The Two Types of Capitalism
Historically, capitalism has manifested in two forms:
① Liberal Capitalism
② Socialist Capitalism
Though differing in appearance, both share the same foundational concepts and originate from Western thought, particularly the Enlightenment movement, which proclaimed man as free and autonomous.
◈ The Enlightenment Movement and the Theory of Socialism
The Enlightenment was based on the principles of freedom and equality. This movement declared that man could determine good and evil through reason alone and no longer required revelation. Socialism adopted these very values.
Freedom: Every individual is free to fulfill his desires.
Equality: Every person should be granted equal rights.
◈ The Islamic Perspective
In Islam, a society cannot be established on the foundations of freedom and equality. Islam recognizes piety (taqwa) and servitude (‘ubudiyyah) as the true criteria of virtue.

◈ The Difference Between Liberal and Socialist Capitalism
Although both systems are founded on identical values, a fundamental distinction lies between them:
- Liberal Capitalism: The individual is granted the right to define good and evil.
- Socialist Capitalism: This right is transferred to the collective or a specific class rather than the individual.
◈ Marx’s Theory: Materialism and Class Conflict
Karl Marx, in his theory of history, claimed that human progress is the result of ongoing class struggle.
Key Concepts:
① In every era of history, a conflict has existed between two classes: the rulers and the ruled.
② As the means of production evolved, so did the class structures.
③ A revolution led by the working class would ultimately give birth to a society founded on equality and freedom.
◈ Marx’s Critique of Capitalism
- Surplus Value: Capitalists exploit labor by extracting more than what they pay the workers—a concept Marx referred to as surplus value.
- Exploitation: By depriving workers of ownership of the means of production, they are exploited.
- Market System: The capitalist market concentrates wealth and resources in the hands of a few.
◈ Forms of Socialism
① Communist Revolution:
In countries like Russia and China, worker-led movements overthrew governments, and the Communist Party established state capitalism.
② Social Democracy:
After World War II, socialism took a new shape known as social democracy, aimed at establishing a welfare state that recognized the social rights of workers.
◈ The Conflict Between Islam and Socialism
- Islam emphasizes servitude to Allah and divine guidance, while socialism promotes freedom and equality.
- An Islamic society is built on obedience to Allah and justice, while socialism aims to deify man by granting him complete autonomy.
- The Prophetic ﷺ revolution aimed at implementing the Shari’ah, in which there is no room for unrestrained freedom or absolute equality.
◈ Dangers of Socialist Capitalism
✔ Socialism can weaken the Islamic intellectual framework.
✔ The concept of a welfare state within social democracy poses a threat to the Islamic revolution, as it prioritizes material comfort and worldly luxury.
✔ Movements like anti-globalization and social rights campaigns are actually subtle tools used to strengthen the capitalist order—and must be approached with caution.
❖ Conclusion ❖
The Islamic system is based on servitude to Allah and divine guidance, whereas both socialism and liberalism are founded upon disbelief (kufr) and atheism (ilḥād).
It is essential for Muslims to completely reject these false ideologies and adopt the Islamic way of life, rooted in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and the implementation of Shari‘ah.
