❀ Question

What is the correct method of calling the Takbeer (Iqamah) for Salah? Is there more reward in saying each phrase once or twice? Kindly explain the version emphasized by the Prophet ﷺ, as there is conflict over this issue in Nizamabad — even among some Ahl al-Hadith, who consider repeating the phrases preferable.

❀ Answer

It is preferable to pronounce each phrase of the Iqamah once, except for the phrase “قَدْ قَامَتِ ٱلصَّلَاةُ“, which should be said twice.

❀ Supporting Narrations

① The wordings taught by Zaid ibn ‘Abd al-Barr follow this very method, and are narrated in Ahmad al-Mutalaqqi.

② A narration from Hazrat Anas (رضي الله عنه) states:

“أمر بلال أن يشفع الأذان ولو ترّسلًا فَأَمَّهُ”
“Bilal was commanded to pronounce the Adhan slowly and deliberately, even if his voice was not melodious.”

This narration is found in the Sihah collections.

③ Another narration from Ibn ‘Umar (رضي الله عنهما) mentions:

“إنما كان الأذان على عهد رسول الله ﷺ مرتين مرتين، والإقامة مرة، غير أنه يقول: قد قامت الصلاة، قد قامت الصلاة”
“Indeed, during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Adhan was recited twice (each phrase repeated), and the Iqamah was recited once (each phrase once), except for the phrase ‘قَدْ قَامَتِ ٱلصَّلَاةُ‘ which was recited twice.”
