Question:

What conversation took place between Allah Almighty and Iblis regarding Adam (peace be upon him) and his offspring?

Answer:

Allah, the Exalted, said:
«إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ السَّاجِدِينَ ‎ ﴿٣١﴾ He said, “O Iblis, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?” (32) He said, “Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud.” (33) [Allah] said, “Then get out of it, for indeed, you are expelled. (34) And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense.” (35) He said, “My Lord, then reprieve me until the Day they are resurrected.” (36) [Allah] said, “So indeed, you are of those reprieved (37) Until the Day of the time well-known.” (38) He said, “My Lord, because You have put me in error, I will surely make [disobedience] attractive to them on earth, and I will mislead them all (39) Except, among them, Your chosen servants.” (40) [Allah] said, “This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight. (41) Indeed, My servants – no authority will you have over them, except those who follow you of the deviators. (42) And indeed, Hell is the promised place for them all. (43) It has seven gates; for every gate is of them a portion designated.” (44)»

“But Iblis refused to be among those who prostrate. Allah said: O Iblis! What is wrong with you that you do not join those who prostrate? He said: I will never prostrate to a human whom You created from sounding clay, foul-smelling black mud. Allah said: Then get out of it, for surely you are rejected. And indeed, upon you is a special curse until the Day of Judgment. He said: My Lord, then grant me respite until the day they are resurrected. Allah said: Indeed, you are among those who are granted respite, until the known appointed time. He said: My Lord! Because You have led me astray, I will surely adorn the earth for them and mislead them all. Except Your chosen servants among them. Allah said: This is the straight path to Me. Indeed, My servants, you have no authority over them except those who follow you among the misguided. And surely Hell is the promised place for them all. It has seven gates, and for each gate there is a portion assigned.”

In the mentioned verses, Allah Almighty speaks about mentioning Adam (peace be upon him) publicly among the angels before creating him, commanding the angels to prostrate to Adam (peace be upon him) to honor him, and mentions the refusal of their enemy Iblis to prostrate. The reason for Iblis’s refusal is his envy, disbelief, obstinacy, arrogance, and pride in falsehood.
