❖ Question

After the two obligatory rakʿāt of Jumuʿah, is the Sunnah prayer two rakʿāt or four rakʿāt?

❖ Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, wa-ṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

Concerning the Sunnah prayer after the obligatory rakʿāt of Jumuʿah, different aḥādīth have been narrated, all with authentic chains, which clarify that after Jumuʿah one may:

❀ Pray two rakʿāt
❀ Pray four rakʿāt
❀ Pray six rakʿāt

❖ Evidence for Two Rakʿāt After Jumuʿah

Authentic narrations establish that performing two rakʿāt after the Jumuʿah obligation is Sunnah.

❖ Evidence for Four Rakʿāt After Jumuʿah

In Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ said:

«مَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ مُصَلِّيًا بَعْدَ الْجُمُعَةِ فَلْيُصَلِّ أَرْبَعًا»
“Whoever among you prays after Jumuʿah, let him pray four rakʿāt.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim)

This indicates that a believer should perform at least four rakʿāt after Jumuʿah.

❖ Evidence for Six Rakʿāt After Jumuʿah

In Sharḥ Maʿānī al-Āthār, there is also a narration regarding six rakʿāt after Jumuʿah, showing that this too is a permissible practice.

❖ Conclusion

Therefore, after the obligatory rakʿāt of Jumuʿah, it is valid to:

✔ Pray two rakʿāt
✔ Pray four rakʿāt
✔ Pray six rakʿāt

All three forms are established by authentic aḥādīth.
