❖ What Is the Preferred Time for ‘Asr Prayer? — In Light of Hadith

📚 Source: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

What is the most preferred (مختار) time for offering the ‘Asr prayer according to Hadith?

❖ Answer:

The preferred time for ‘Asr begins when the shadow of an object becomes equal to its length (one shadow length) and continues until it reaches twice its length (two shadow lengths).
Delaying ‘Asr beyond two shadows without valid reason is considered disliked (مکروہ).

✅ Hadith Evidence for One-Shadow Beginning:

❀ ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (رضي الله عنه) narrated:

“Jibreel عليه السلام led me in prayer twice by the House (Ka‘bah), and he offered ‘Asr when the shadow of everything became equal to its own length.”
📘 (Musnad Ahmad 1/333, 354; Musnad ‘Abd ibn Humaid: 703; Sunan Abi Dawood: 393; Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 149; Dar Qutni: 1/258; Mustadrak al-Hakim: 1/193)
🔹 Chain classified as Hasan (sound)

✅ Scholarly Position:

❀ Imam Ibn Abi al-‘Izz al-Hanafi (رحمه الله) said:

“The consensus of the Ummah implies that it is disliked to delay ‘Asr beyond the point when the shadow becomes twice the object’s length.”
📘 (Al-Tanbih ‘ala Mushkilat al-Hidayah, 1/467)

✅ Practical Example from the Prophet ﷺ:

❀ ‘Aishah (رضي الله عنها) said:

“The Prophet ﷺ would offer the ‘Asr prayer while the sunlight was still shining in my courtyard, and no shadow had yet appeared.”
📘 (Sahih al-Bukhari: 546; Sahih Muslim: 611)

❀ Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) narrated:

“The Prophet ﷺ used to pray ‘Asr when the sun was still high and bright. A person could go to the outskirts of Madinah (like ‘Awali) and return while the sun was still high.”
📘 (Sahih al-Bukhari: 50; Sahih Muslim: 621)

❀ Rafi‘ ibn Khadij (رضي الله عنه) said:

“We used to offer ‘Asr with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then slaughter camels, divide them into ten parts, cook the meat, and eat the fully cooked meat before sunset.”
📘 (Sahih al-Bukhari: 485; Sahih Muslim: 625)

❀ Anas ibn Malik (رضي الله عنه) further reported:

“We used to pray ‘Asr, then someone would go to Quba (a nearby village), and upon arrival, the sun would still be high.”
📘 (Sahih al-Bukhari: 51; Sahih Muslim: 621)

❀ He also said:

“The Prophet ﷺ would offer ‘Asr while the sun was white and shining clearly.”
📘 (Musnad Ahmad: 3/31, 132, 169, 184)

❖ Conclusion:

✔ The preferred time for ‘Asr prayer begins when the shadow of an object equals its length (one-shadow), and ends when the shadow becomes twice its length (two-shadows).
✔ Delaying it beyond two shadows is Makruh (disliked) according to the consensus of the Ummah.
✔ The Sunnah practice of the Prophet ﷺ was to offer ‘Asr early, while the sun was still high and bright.

✔ Key Point:
🌤 The optimal time for ‘Asr is between one-shadow and two-shadow lengths, and delaying beyond that without excuse is against the Sunnah.
