📚 Source: Fatawa Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri

❖ Question:

What is the most preferred (mustahabb) time for offering the ‘Isha prayer according to Hadith?

❖ Answer:

The preferred time for ‘Isha prayer is until the middle of the night (نصف الليل).
Delaying it beyond that without a valid excuse is disliked (مکروہ).

✅ Scholarly Consensus on Start Time:

❀ Imam al-Nawawi (رحمه الله, d. 676 AH) said:

“The scholars are unanimously agreed that the time of ‘Isha begins with the disappearance of twilight (shafaq). There are many authentic and well-known Ahadith confirming this.”
📘 (Tahdhib al-Asma’ wal-Lughat, 3/165)

✅ Consensus on Dislike of Delay Beyond Half the Night:

❀ Imam Ibn Abi al-‘Izz al-Hanafi (رحمه الله, d. 792 AH) said:

“The Ummah is unanimously agreed that it is disliked to delay the ‘Isha prayer beyond its preferred time without a valid excuse.”
📘 (Al-Tanbih ‘ala Mushkilat al-Hidayah, 1/466)

✅ Hadith Evidence for Delaying to Half the Night (as Mustahabb):

❀ Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari (رضي الله عنه) reported:

“The Prophet ﷺ delayed the prayer until it was deep into the night.”
📘 (Sahih al-Bukhari: 565; Sahih Muslim: 641)

❀ Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) narrated:

“If it were not for the weakness of the weak and the illness of the sick, I would have delayed ‘Isha until the middle of the night.”
📘 (Sunan Abi Dawood: 422; Sunan al-Nasa’i: 539; Sunan Ibn Majah: 693)
📌 Graded Sahih by Imam Ibn Khuzaymah (رحمه الله, d. 345 AH)

❀ Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) reported:

“Were it not that I would cause hardship for my Ummah, I would have commanded them to delay ‘Isha to one-third or half of the night.”
