Sharʿī Ruling on the Virtue of Praying at the Beginning of Time and Delaying the Prayer
Source: Fatāwā Arkān al-Islām
Question:
What is the “earliest time” for prayer? Which time is best for performing the prayer? Is the earliest time always the most virtuous?
Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd!
The most complete prayer is that which is offered in the time allotted for it by the Sharīʿah. The Prophet ﷺ, when asked:
❀ “Which deed is most beloved to Allāh?”
He ﷺ replied:
((اَلصَّلَائُ عَلٰی وَقْتِہَا))
“Prayer at its proper time.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, al-Mawāqīt, Bāb Faḍl al-Ṣalāh li-Waqtihā, ḥadīth: 527; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, al-Īmān, ḥadīth: 85)
The Prophet ﷺ did not explicitly say “at the earliest time” because some prayers are Sunnah to be offered early, while others are Sunnah to be delayed.
Details of the Best Time for Different Prayers
1. ʿIshāʾ Prayer – Delaying is Better
It is better to delay ʿIshāʾ, as the Prophet ﷺ once delayed it until some companions said: “O Messenger of Allāh, the women and children have fallen asleep.” He then came out and prayed, saying:
((اِن ھذاُ لَوَقْتُہَا لَوْ لَا اَنْ اَشُقَّ عَلٰی اُمَّتِیْ))
“This would be its (best) time if it were not for the hardship it would cause my Ummah.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, al-Masājid, ḥadīth: 638)
For a woman praying at home, it is best to delay ʿIshāʾ until the first third of the night.
2. Travel – Delaying is Better
When on a journey, delaying ʿIshāʾ is preferred if there is no hardship.
3. Leisure/Outing – Delaying is Better
During recreation or outings, if ʿIshāʾ time comes, it is preferable to delay the prayer (without hardship).
Other Prayers
❀ Fajr, Ẓuhr, ʿAṣr, and Maghrib should generally be prayed early, unless there is a reason to delay.
Delaying Ẓuhr in Extreme Heat
In intense heat, it is Sunnah to delay Ẓuhr until the weather cools. The Prophet ﷺ said:
((اِذَا اشْتَدَّ الْحَرُّ فَاَبْرِدُوا بِالصَّلَاۃِ فَاِنَّ شِدَّۃَ الْحَرِّ مِنْ فَیْحِ جَہَنَّمَ))
“When the heat is intense, delay the prayer until it cools, for the severity of heat is from the breath of Hell.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, ḥadīth: 533; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, ḥadīth: 615)
The same was practised during travel, as reported in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
Delaying for Congregation
If a person is in a place without a congregation but knows they can join one later in the city within the prayer’s time, it is better — and even obligatory — to delay so they can pray in congregation.
Clarification on the Extent of Delay
Delaying Ẓuhr due to heat (ibrād) does not mean pushing it so close to ʿAṣr that its time nearly ends. Rather, it means delaying moderately beyond the usual time without nearing the next prayer’s time.
