📜 An Islamic Perspective on the Rulings of Democratic Governance
✍️ Derived from: Fatawa Ulama-e-Hadith, Kitab al-Salah, Volume 1

❖ Question:

Is the current democratic system considered shirk (polytheism), kufr (disbelief), a major sin, disobedience to Allah, and clear misguidance?

❖ Shar‘i Ruling:

✅ These descriptions are correct and applicable only if democracy or majority opinion is given precedence over the Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

❖ Explanation:

If a democratic system:

✔ Places majority opinion above the commandments of Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ,
✔ And makes popular will the ultimate authority,
Then such a system falls into the category of shirk, kufr, major sin, and clear misguidance.

❖ Core Islamic Principle:

According to the Islamic creed:

📌 No system or legislation can be accepted if it contradicts or overrides the commands of Allah or the Prophetic Sunnah.

❖ Conditional Permissibility of Democracy:

✔ Permissible: If the democratic system functions under the framework of Shari‘ah and remains subordinate to divine legislation.

❌ Impermissible: If Shari‘ah is sidelined, and human opinion or majority rule becomes the ultimate authority, then such a system is rejected in Islam.

❖ Summary:

  • A democracy that respects and adheres to Shari‘ah can be accommodated.
  • But a democracy that overrides divine law with majority rule is unacceptable, and may lead to major theological deviation.
