❖ Question
If a person misses the Dhuhr prayer and arrives at the mosque while the congregation for Asr is already in progress, should he join the congregation with the intention of Dhuhr, perform Dhuhr separately, or join the Asr congregation and make up Dhuhr afterward?
✔ Answer
Alḥamdulillāh! In such a situation, the guidance of Shari‘ah is that the person must join the Asr congregation and perform Asr with the congregation. It is not permissible to join the congregation with the intention of Dhuhr, nor is it permissible to pray Dhuhr separately during the ongoing congregation.
➊ Evidence from Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said:
❝ When the congregational prayer for an obligatory Salah is established, only that prayer may be offered; no other prayer (whether obligatory or supererogatory) may be performed. ❞
(Musnad Ahmad, Fath al-Bari)
Fath al-Bari also emphasizes that when the congregation is established, the follower must perform the same prayer as the Imam’s intention. It is not permissible to join a congregational prayer for a different obligatory Salah.
➋ Juristic Explanation
According to scholars such as Tahtawi and others, if a person has missed Dhuhr and the congregation for Asr has commenced, he is obligated to join the Asr congregation. He should then make up the Dhuhr prayer afterward. Joining the Asr congregation with the intention of Dhuhr or leaving the congregation to pray separately is impermissible in Shari‘ah.
➌ Further Clarification
If a person joins the Asr congregation and then performs the missed Dhuhr prayer afterward, this is more appropriate and preferred. Though some Companions, such as Abu al-Darda رضي الله عنه, are reported to have held different views, these do not override the general evidences in this matter.
➍ Summary
◄ When the time for Asr begins, it is obligatory to join the Asr congregation.
◄ It is not valid to join the Asr congregation with the intention of Dhuhr.
◄ After performing Asr with the congregation, the missed Dhuhr prayer should be offered separately as Qada’.
