❖ Secularization and the Decline of Righteous Deeds

✿ Meaning and Nature of Secularization

“Secularization” refers to the process by which human actions, behaviors, and relationships are detached from their original moral and religious value-framework and are redefined according to new functional, mechanistic norms. This process evolves in harmony with modern social structures, technology, and societal dynamics — resulting in fundamental transformations in social life.

❖ Difference Between Secularism and Secularization

◈ Secularism: A political and ideological theory concerning belief systems, knowledge, and power structures.
◈ Secularization: A gradual transformation of human behavior and relationships, where religious and moral values lose their influence, and human life is restructured around material utility and functionality.

✿ Secularization and the Death of Moral Self

Secularization mechanizes human conduct and relationships, shifting them from moral responsibility to material benefit and efficiency.

✔ As a result, the “moral self” is eroded, giving rise to a new psychological and material self.
✔ The modern state, by assigning citizenship and controlling legal, economic, and social affairs, replaces moral judgment with bureaucratic identity.
✔ Thus, value-based decision-making weakens, and performance-based legitimacy dominates.

❖ The Modern State as a Substitute “God”

The modern secular state begins to assume the role traditionally attributed to God in religious societies:

◈ Grants identity — e.g., national ID cards, passports
◈ Provides existence — legal status and social security
◈ Controls sustenance — employment, economic access
◈ Becomes the source of survival — security, health, and education

✿ Rule of Law and the Collapse of Righteous Action

In the modern legal framework, the concept of righteous deeds (aʿmāl ṣāliḥah) is replaced by “performance” and “compliance”.

✔ The Rule of Law serves to extend legal and state power, while moral and ethical considerations become irrelevant or secondary.
✔ Deeds are assessed by their legal compliance, not their moral worth.

❖ Religion’s Marginal Role in a Secular Society

The modern secular state limits religion to personal rituals and spirituality, excluding it from collective, political, and ethical life.

✔ Religious worship is reduced to mechanical repetition, with diminished spiritual essence.
✔ The external form remains, but the transformative moral impact declines.

✿ The Erosion of Social Bonds and Ethics

Secularization also undermines core human relationships, such as:

◈ Family
◈ Neighborhood bonds
◈ Hospitality and community ties

Instead, the modern socio-economic model is built on principles like:

✔ “One person, one vote”
✔ “One job, one stomach”

— reducing human interactions to legal rights and economic needs, rather than moral obligations and spiritual kinship.

❖ Religious Society vs. Secular Society

◉ Religious Society:
Rooted not merely in rituals, but in ethical behavior, communal responsibility, and moral character.

◉ Secular Society:
May tolerate worship, but prohibits its influence in shaping social or political life.

✔ Conclusion: The Challenge of Secularization

Secularization is an even more profound threat than secularism, as it subtly transforms both belief and practice.

✅ Countering this challenge requires more than individual piety or worship.
✅ It demands a comprehensive revival of moral, social, and economic values at the community and institutional levels.

Only through intellectual engagement and systemic reform can the Islamic ethos be preserved in the face of secularization.
