Clarifying the Concept of Striking a Woman in Islam
❖ Objection by Non-Muslims and Its Rebuttal
Non-Muslims—particularly Christian circles—often object to Surah An-Nisa (Verse 34) of the Qur’an, claiming that Islam grants men the right to beat women.
The aim of this article is to clarify and refute this objection.
❖ The Verse and Its Proper Interpretation
In Surah An-Nisa (4:34), Allah ﷻ states:
اَلرِّجَالُ قَوّٰمُوۡنَ عَلَی النِّسَآءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ اللّٰہُ بَعۡضَہُمۡ عَلٰی بَعۡضٍ وَّ بِمَاۤ اَنۡفَقُوۡا مِنۡ اَمۡوَالِہِمۡ…
Men are guardians over women, because Allah has given one more (strength or responsibility) than the other, and because they spend from their wealth…
❖ Importance of Contextual Interpretation
In Islamic teachings, the proper understanding of any verse must be based on:
✔ Context (Siyāq-o-Sabāq)
✔ Other related commandments
✔ Holistic interpretation of Shariah
❖ Key Points to Understand
◈ Marital Relationships in Islam
Islam confines marital intimacy within the bounds of Nikāḥ and prohibits all unlawful relations.
◈ Conditions for Physical Discipline
The permission to strike mentioned in this verse is:
✔ Not general
✔ Extremely conditional
✔ A last resort after all efforts at reconciliation fail
◈ Meaning of “Nushūz” (Defiance)
“Nushūz” refers to a woman’s rebellious behavior that disrupts the family structure—such as:
• Persistent disobedience
• Immoral conduct
• Attitudes that negatively affect the husband or the household
❖ Gradual Corrective Measures in Islam
Islam outlines a step-by-step disciplinary approach:
① Advising gently: The first step is to offer sincere and gentle counsel.
② Separation in bed: If advice fails, then temporarily separate sleeping arrangements.
③ Light physical discipline: Only if the first two steps fail, light, symbolic striking may be used.
⚠️ It must not leave a mark, bruise, or cause injury.
❖ Instruction of the Prophet ﷺ
Jābir (RA) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said in the Farewell Sermon:
“Fear Allah regarding women… If they commit blatant immorality, then you may strike them lightly, in a way that leaves no mark.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Book of Ḥajj, Hadith 1218)
❖ Prohibition of Harming the Face
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not strike the face, and do not use abusive language.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Hadith 5204)
❖ Rights of the Wife and Duties of the Husband
Islam also obligates the husband to provide food, shelter, and other necessities for his wife.
If a husband fails in his responsibilities, the wife has the right to seek judicial intervention or Khulʿ (separation).
❖ Domestic Violence in Western Societies
Despite criticism of Islam, domestic abuse statistics in the West reveal alarming realities:
◈ According to UN Women, 40% to 70% of women in countries like Australia, Canada, and the U.S. are killed by close partners.
◈ In the U.S., between 2003–2005, nearly half of murdered women were killed by their spouses or partners.
❖ Islam Forbids Abuse and Its Consequences
✔ Islam does not permit striking a wife over trivial issues like undercooked food or arguments with in-laws.
✔ The purpose of physical discipline is correction, not vengeance or emotional release.
✔ Even light striking is discouraged for repeated or habitual use.
✔ If the husband himself fails in his duties, he has no right to use disciplinary measures.
❖ Summary
☑ Permission to strike is only for severe defiance and only when all reformative steps fail.
☑ Even then, it must be symbolic, non-injurious, and without causing pain.
☑ The purpose is reform, not punishment or domination.
☑ If the husband is unjust, the wife has the right to seek separation (Khulʿ).
Western propaganda often distorts the meaning of this verse by removing it from its context, while the truth is that Islam ensures the protection of women and the stability of the family system.
