❖ Question:
Can a deceased person be shrouded in silk?
❖ Answer:
It is ḥarām for men to wear silk, and this prohibition also applies in the matter of shrouding.
❖ Statement of Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr (رحمه الله, 463H):
قد أجمع العلماء على كراهية الخن والحرير للرجال فى الكفن
“The scholars are unanimously agreed that shrouding men in either thick or fine silk is makrūh taḥrīmī (prohibitively disliked).”
(Al-Istidhkār, 3/20)
If the deceased did not bequeath to be shrouded in silk, but the heirs shrouded him in silk, then the sin does not fall upon the deceased, rather it falls upon the heirs.
