❀ Ruling on Repeating the Iqāmah in a Second Congregation for the Same Prayer ❀
Taken from: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol. 1, Kitāb al-Adhān, p. 252
❖ Question:
If a second congregation is established for the same obligatory prayer in the mosque, should the Iqāmah be called again?
Some people claim that if the Adhān was already given once, then repeating the Iqāmah is unnecessary.
What is the correct Sharʿī ruling?
❖ Answer:
Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
There is no explicit Marfūʿ ḥadīth (directly attributed to the Prophet ﷺ) on this specific matter. However, the actions of the Companions and early scholars (Salaf) provide guidance.
❖ Statements of the Companions:
➤ 1. Anas ibn Mālik (رضي الله عنه):
He once arrived at a mosque where the main congregation had already prayed, yet he had the Adhān and Iqāmah called again, and then led the prayer.

• al-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī 1/407; 3/70
• Taqliq al-Taʿlīq 2/676–677
✦ Imām Bukhārī also mentioned it in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (Taʿlīqan) under Bāb Fadhl al-Ṣalāh fī al-Jamāʿah before ḥadīth 645.
This report is authentic and establishes the permissibility of repeating both Adhān and Iqāmah.
➤ 2. ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (رضي الله عنه):
He prayed at home with al-Aswad and ʿAlqamah, but did not order Adhān or Iqāmah.
✦ Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, ḥadīth 534
This implies that even without Adhān or Iqāmah, the prayer is valid, particularly if the main call had already been made.
➤ 3. ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنه):
He said:
“If you are in a village where the Adhān and Iqāmah have already been called, then that suffices for you.”

• al-Maʿrifah wa al-Tārīkh by Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān al-Fārisī 2/209 (authentic chain)
• al-Sunan al-Kubrā by al-Bayhaqī 1/406
Also, he himself would not repeat the Iqāmah in such cases.
✔ Sharʿī Ruling:
✅ Both options are permissible for a second congregation of the same prayer in a mosque:
① If you choose to repeat the Iqāmah (and Adhān), it is allowed and established from the actions of the Salaf.
② If you omit the Iqāmah, the prayer is still valid, especially if the main Adhān and Iqāmah were already made.
⚠ If doing so publicly (e.g., via loudspeaker) causes confusion or division, then it should be avoided. In such cases, calling the Iqāmah quietly is a better option.

And Allah knows best what is correct.
