Performing ‘Asr Behind Maghrib Congregation – Shari‘ah Guidance
Source: Fatawa ‘Ilmiyyah, Vol. 1, Kitab al-Salah, p. 294
Question:
If someone was unable to offer the ‘Asr prayer due to a valid excuse, and upon arriving at the mosque finds that the congregation for Maghrib is about to begin, should he perform ‘Asr first and then join the Maghrib congregation, or should he first join the Maghrib prayer and make up ‘Asr later? Is maintaining the order of prayers (tarteeb) necessary in this case?
Answer:
Wa ‘alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh!
Alhamdulillah, wa-s-salatu wa-s-salamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba‘d:
Guidance from the Hadith
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“أَدْرَكْتُمْ فَصَلُّوا ، وَمَا فَاتَكُمْ فَأَتِمُّوا“
“Whatever you catch [with the Imam], pray it, and whatever you miss, complete it.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 635, Sahih Muslim: 603)
Clarification of the Issue
In light of this Hadith:
If a person reaches the mosque and the congregational prayer has already begun, he should:
◈ Join the congregation for whatever part of the prayer remains.
◈ Make up any missed Rak‘ahs afterward.
Although maintaining the order of prayers (tarteeb bayn al-salawat) is desirable and preferred,
there is concession in cases of necessity or valid excuse, where strict order cannot be maintained.
Can One Offer ‘Asr Behind Maghrib Imam?
There is no authentic Hadith or Athar indicating the permissibility of offering ‘Asr behind an Imam who is leading Maghrib.
Therefore, the correct method in this situation is:
◈ Join the congregation and perform Maghrib with the Imam.
◈ Afterward, make up the missed ‘Asr prayer separately.
Conclusion
✔ Join the Maghrib congregation and perform Maghrib.
✔ Make up the missed ‘Asr prayer after completing Maghrib.
Even though maintaining prayer order is preferable,
skipping it in case of necessity is permissible in Shari‘ah.
