Excerpted from: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol. 1, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, p. 274
✿ Question
Is it permissible to offer Sunnah or Nafl prayers after ʿAsr?
(A questioner)
✿ Answer
All praise is due to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:
The prohibition of offering voluntary prayers after Fajr and ʿAsr is clearly established in authentic narrations.
❶ Clear Prohibition from the Prophet ﷺ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“لَا صَلَاةَ بَعْدَ الصُّبْحِ حَتَّى تَرْتَفِعَ الشَّمْسُ، وَلَا صَلَاةَ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ حَتَّى تَغِيبَ الشَّمْسُ”
Translation:
“There is no prayer after the Fajr prayer until the sun rises, and no prayer after the ʿAsr prayer until the sun sets.”
— (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 586, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 828)
This prohibition specifically applies to non-obligatory (nafl) prayers during these times.
❖ Supported by Multiple Hadith Sources
Additional sources that emphasize this ruling:
◈ Sunan al-Nasā’ī, Vol. 1, p. 278
◈ Other major Hadith collections as well
❷ Nature of the Prohibition: Tanzeehi or Tahreemi?
Islamic jurists have differentiated between types of prohibition:
✔ Tahreemi (strictly forbidden):
During the actual moments of sunrise and sunset, prayer is impermissible.
✔ Tanzeehi (discouraged, not strictly forbidden):
In periods immediately after Fajr or ʿAsr, prayer is discouraged but not absolutely forbidden.
❸ Report from ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (RA)
He narrated:
“The Prophet ﷺ prohibited prayer after ʿAsr, unless the sun is still white, clear, and high in the sky.”
— (Sunan al-Nasā’ī: 574, Sunan Abī Dāwūd: 1274 – Authentic chain)
❹ Exceptions to the General Prohibition
Some prayers are permissible even after ʿAsr or Fajr, including:
◈ Qadā (Make-up) Prayers
If a person misses an obligatory prayer due to forgetfulness or sleep, he may offer it immediately—even during the prohibited time.
◈ Salāh al-Janāzah (Funeral Prayer)
If time is limited and the body is present, it may be offered during these periods.
◈ Salāh al-Istisqā’ (Rain Prayer)
Permissible during these times due to its necessity.
◈ Salāh al-Kusūf (Solar Eclipse Prayer)
Permissible even after ʿAsr.
◈ Tahiyyat al-Masjid (Greeting the Mosque)
Two rakʿāt upon entering the mosque, even after ʿAsr or Fajr.
◈ Voluntary Prayers in al-Masjid al-Ḥarām
Voluntary prayers are permissible at any time in the Sacred Mosque in Makkah.
◈ Missed Sunnah Mu’akkadah
If daily Sunnah Mu’akkadah prayers (such as Fajr or Ẓuhr Sunnahs) were missed, they may be made up afterward.
❖ Example from the Prophet ﷺ
Once, the Prophet ﷺ missed the two rakʿāt Sunnah of Ẓuhr, so he performed them after ʿAsr.
— (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Sunan al-Nasā’ī, Vol. 1, pp. 281–282)
❖ Practice of the Companions
Sayyidunā Qays ibn Qahd (RA) missed the Sunnahs of Fajr, so he offered them immediately after the Fajr farḍ.
The Prophet ﷺ did not object, indicating silent approval.
— (Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Khuzaymah: Vol. 6, p. 162, Ḥadīth: 1116)
— (Ibn Ḥibbān: Vol. 4, p. 82, Ḥadīth: 2462)
— Authenticated by al-Ḥākim and al-Dhahabī in al-Mustadrak (Vol. 1, pp. 274–275)
