❀ Ruling on Cooling the Ẓuhr Prayer in Summer: Is It Specific to Travel? ❀

Excerpted from: Fatāwā ʿIlmiyyah, Vol. 1, Kitāb al-Ṣalāh, p. 271

✿ Question

Our school ends at 2:00 PM, and we usually pray Ẓuhr after dismissal. According to our timetable, the time of zawāl ends at 12:02 PM. Can we offer Ẓuhr during our school break shortly after that?
Some people say that in summer, the Ẓuhr prayer should be delayed (cooled). Is this Hadith applicable only to travelers or to everyone?
(Asked by: Ẓafar Iqbāl)

✿ Answer

All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:

Once it is certain that zawāl time has ended, then praying Ẓuhr immediately after or shortly thereafter is permissible, as confirmed by many general Hadiths.

❶ Hadith About Cooling the Ẓuhr Prayer in Heat

Narrated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī:

“We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey… He said: ‘Indeed, the severity of heat is from the exhalation of Hell, so when the heat is intense, delay the prayer (make it cooler).’”
— (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb Mawāqīt al-Ṣalāh, Bāb al-Ibrād bi’l-Ẓuhr fi’l-Safar, Ḥadīth: 539)

This Hadith clearly refers to delaying the Ẓuhr prayer in extreme heat during travel.

❷ Fiqhi Principle: General Texts are Restrained by Specific Contexts

According to well-established legal principles:

General narrations (muṭlaq) are interpreted in light of specific contexts (muqayyad).

Thus, the command “abridū bi’l-ṣalāh” (cool the prayer) is considered specific to the state of travel, and not a general rule for all circumstances.

❸ The Prophet’s Practice in Madinah

In contrast to travel, while in Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ would offer the Ẓuhr prayer as soon as zawāl occurred.

As narrated from Anas (RA):

“He stood upon the pulpit…”
— (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Bāb Waqt al-Ẓuhr ʿinda al-Zawāl, Ḥadīth: 540)

This indicates that delaying Ẓuhr due to heat was not the routine practice in non-travel conditions.

❹ Application to the Current School Situation

If zawāl ends at 12:02 PM, then:

✔ Praying Ẓuhr shortly after that time is completely valid.
✔ Since school ends at 2:00 PM, offering the prayer then is permissible, provided it is still within the Ẓuhr time frame, which extends until the start of ʿAṣr.

✔ It is preferred to offer the prayer at its earliest time, but in cases of difficulty or necessity, delaying slightly is allowed.

❀ Summary

✔ Ẓuhr prayer should ideally be offered soon after zawāl in regular circumstances.
✔ The Hadith about cooling the Ẓuhr prayer refers specifically to travel during extreme heat, not to normal residential life.
✔ The Prophet ﷺ’s practice in Madinah was to pray at the start of Ẓuhr time.
✔ School constraints that result in praying at 2:00 PM are permissible, as long as it’s within valid prayer time.
